Why Chile in 2026
Chilean duct work sits in two places. The Santiago Metropolitan Region carries most of the commercial, healthcare and data-centre building, and that is where most HVAC contractors and their duct shops are based. The mining north, centred on the Antofagasta region and Calama, buys ventilation, dust extraction and climate control for plants, electrical rooms, workshops and camps. A shop that can serve both has a wider base of work than the local building cycle alone.
2026 demand drivers
- Data centres in Santiago. In May 2025 Amazon announced it would invest more than USD 4 billion to launch an AWS infrastructure region in Chile with three Availability Zones, planned for the end of 2026; InvestChile reports the data centres will be in the province of Santiago. Colliers figures published in October 2026 put Chile at about 255 MW operating across 36 facilities, with more than 120 MW under construction (EdgeConneX, Scala Data Centers, ODATA and Terranova among the developers) and a pipeline of 367.8 MW by 2031. JLL, cited by InvestChile, says Santiago holds 46% of Latin America's hyperscale capacity. The government's National Data Centers Plan 2024-2030 backs that growth. Data halls mean long runs of large spiral and rectangular duct.
- Hospitals. The new Hospital Sótero del Río in Puente Alto, built by Sacyr for the Servicio de Salud Metropolitano Sur Oriente, has a scheduled delivery date of November 2027 according to the Ministry of Labour. In 2026 the Ministry of Health presented an oncology investment plan with 29 projects running from 2026 to 2035. Hospital work is fitting-heavy, with sealed and sometimes stainless duct for theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories.
- Commercial building. Offices, retail and mixed-use projects in Santiago are the steady base load for rectangular duct. Law 21.305 on energy efficiency ties an energy rating to final municipal approval for commercial and office buildings, with its regulations being rolled out, which keeps attention on duct leakage and insulation.
- Mining in the Antofagasta region. Antofagasta Minerals approved its Centinela Second Concentrator in December 2023 at an estimated USD 4.4 billion, with a 95,000 tonne-per-day concentrator and first copper targeted for 2027. Codelco's Chuquicamata Underground near Calama was built around a large ventilation system that includes a 918 m air extraction shaft finished in 2016. The main airways of an underground mine are tunnels and shafts, so the steadier duct shop work from mining is usually above ground: dust extraction and ventilation duct at crushing and concentrator plants, HVAC and pressurisation for electrical rooms, and climate control for workshops, offices and camps.
Standards and codes used for ductwork in Chile
- SMACNA. Chilean specification references state that sheet metal duct fabrication, support and reinforcement follow the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards. Gauge tables, joint types, reinforcement spacing and leakage classes in project specifications usually come from SMACNA, so a shop's machines need to produce TDF or angle flange joints, Pittsburgh and snaplock seams and standing seams to those tables.
- OGUC. The Ordenanza General de Urbanismo y Construcciones sets passive fire protection requirements, including fire and smoke dampers where ducts pass through fire compartments.
- NCh 433 and NCh 3357. NCh 433 governs seismic design of buildings. NCh 3357:2015 covers the seismic design of non-structural components and systems, which includes ducts, hangers and bracing. The project engineer sets bracing; the duct shop has to deliver sections whose joints and reinforcement line up with the support and bracing points on the drawings.
- NCh 2369:2025. The standard for seismic design of industrial structures and installations, used on mining plants and other industrial sites. MINVU Exempt Decree No. 12, published on 9 March 2026, declared the 2025 edition official and replaced the 2003 edition, with entry into force six months after publication. Ask the project's structural engineer how it applies to duct supports and anchorages on a given job.
- DS 594 and DS 132. DS 594 sets basic sanitary and environmental conditions in workplaces, including air quality. In mines, DS 132 (the Mining Safety Regulation) sets the ventilation requirements underground.
- Electrical installation. Connecting a machine into your workshop is done by a licensed electrician to the SEC technical rules for consumer installations (the RIC pliegos técnicos, which replaced NCh Elec 4/2003).
Importing duct machinery into Chile
- Duty. Chile's general tariff is 6% ad valorem, charged on the CIF value.
- IVA. 19%, charged on CIF plus duty. Chilean Customs' own example: on a CIF value of USD 1,000, duty is USD 60 and IVA is USD 201.40. For a VAT-registered business, import IVA is normally recoverable as a tax credit; confirm with your accountant.
- Trade agreements. Chile has around 34 trade agreements in force covering more than 60 economies (SUBREI figures, January 2026). Where a machine's origin qualifies under an agreement and a valid certificate of origin travels with the shipment, the duty can fall to zero. Whether that applies to a given HS 8462 or 8463 machine depends on the rules of origin, so check with your agente de aduanas before you order. We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and origin documents your broker asks for.
- SEC certification. The SEC requires certification before sale for electrical products in the categories it lists by resolution. Ask your broker or a certification body (organismo de certificación) whether anything in the shipment falls into a listed category before the machine ships.
- Ports. San Antonio and Valparaíso serve Santiago; Antofagasta and Mejillones serve the mining north. Machines travel in containers or on flat racks with fumigated, ISPM-15 compliant timber crating.
Power supply: 220/380 V, 50 Hz
Chile's nominal system voltage is 220/380 V at 50 Hz: 220 V single-phase and 380 V three-phase. Duct machines for Chilean workshops are specified for 380 V three-phase, 50 Hz, so motors, hydraulic packs and controls connect without transformers. Check that your supply can carry the combined load of the machines you will run together; each spec sheet lists installed power.
Typical shop set-ups and which Taokron machines fit
- Santiago contractor shop, commercial and healthcare work. A Rectangular Duct Line SBAL-II or Auto Duct Line SBAL-III for straight rectangular duct, a TDF flange forming machine, a lockformer for Pittsburgh seams, a hydraulic folder, and a plasma cutter for fittings. Add a Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 (Φ80 to Φ1500 mm) when round duct work justifies it.
- Larger fabricator supplying data centres and big projects. An Auto Duct Line SBAL-V, a U-shape line producing TDF, angle flange and drive cleat duct, plus a Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1602 (Φ80 to Φ1600 mm, flying shear) and a Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 for flanged large round duct.
- Northern shop serving mining. A plasma cutter rated to 4 mm sheet, a hydraulic folder, a Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-2020 for diameters up to Φ2500 mm, and stainless duct forming and a seam welder for corrosive or wet duty.
Labour and space
Labour. Chile's legal minimum monthly wage rose to CLP 553,553 from 1 May 2026 under Law 21.830, and experienced duct fitters and welders earn well above that. An auto duct line lets one or two operators produce straight duct that would otherwise need several people on a shear, notcher and folder, freeing skilled fitters for fittings and site work.
Space. Plan the floor from the spec sheet footprints. The SBAL-V U-shape line occupies about 14.5 m by 5 m. The SBTF-1500 spiral tubeformer is about 3.4 m by 2.1 m before its run-out table, and the plasma cutter about 4.8 m by 1.8 m. Add coil storage, a fitting and assembly area, insulation and sealing, and a dispatch bay. Send us your building dimensions and we will return a machine layout with the quotation.
Installation. Installation and commissioning are quoted per engineer-day. Machines carry the CE mark with a Declaration of Conformity, come from an ISO 9001:2015 factory, and are backed by duct machinery experience since 1995 in 100+ countries.

FAQ
Which duct construction standard is used in Chile?
Chilean specifications generally take sheet metal duct fabrication, support and reinforcement from the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards, with fire protection requirements from the OGUC (Ordenanza General de Urbanismo y Construcciones), including fire and smoke dampers where ducts cross fire compartments. The project specification always governs, so check the gauge, joint and leakage class tables it calls up.
Do Chilean seismic rules affect HVAC ductwork?
Yes. Ducts and their hangers are non-structural components. In buildings, seismic design follows NCh 433, and NCh 3357:2015 covers the seismic design of non-structural components and systems. Industrial sites such as mining plants are designed to NCh 2369, whose 2025 edition was declared official by MINVU Exempt Decree No. 12, published on 9 March 2026. The project engineer sets bracing; the duct shop has to deliver sections whose joints and reinforcement match the support and bracing points on the drawings.
What import duty and IVA apply to duct machines in Chile?
Chile's general tariff is 6% ad valorem on the CIF value, and IVA of 19% is charged on CIF plus duty. Chile has around 34 trade agreements in force, so the duty can fall to zero when the machine's origin qualifies and a valid certificate of origin is presented. Confirm the HS code and preferential treatment with your agente de aduanas before ordering. For a VAT-registered business, import IVA is normally recoverable as a tax credit; confirm with your accountant.
Do duct machines need SEC certification in Chile?
The SEC (Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles) requires certification before sale for electrical products in the categories it lists by resolution. Ask your customs broker or a certification body whether anything in your shipment falls into a listed category before the machine ships. Separately, the connection of the machine into your workshop must be done by a licensed electrician to the SEC technical rules for consumer installations.
What voltage do machines need in Chile?
Chile's nominal system voltage is 220/380 V at 50 Hz: 220 V single-phase and 380 V three-phase. Duct machines for Chilean workshops are normally specified for 380 V three-phase, 50 Hz. Tell us at quotation stage if your site supply is different.
Where is HVAC duct demand coming from in Chile in 2026?
Mainly from Santiago: data centres, including the AWS region Amazon announced with an investment of more than USD 4 billion, plus hospitals such as the new Hospital Sótero del Río in Puente Alto and commercial building. In the north, copper projects in the Antofagasta region, such as the Centinela Second Concentrator, need dust extraction, ventilation and HVAC for electrical rooms, workshops and camps.
Can Taokron install and commission machines in Chile?
Yes. Installation and commissioning are quoted per engineer-day, and the quotation lists the days a given machine set normally needs. Machines carry the CE mark with a Declaration of Conformity. A Taokron engineer replies to questions within 12 hours by email or WhatsApp.
