Why the Dominican Republic in 2026
Tourism drives Dominican construction more than any other sector, and almost every hotel room needs ducted fresh air, kitchen and laundry extract and back-of-house ventilation. Free zone manufacturing and Santo Domingo's commercial building add steadier, year-round work.
Hotels and resorts: Punta Cana, Cap Cana, Miches and Cabo Rojo
The country received 11,676,901 visitors in 2025, a record and up about 4.3% on 2024, according to Ministry of Tourism figures. Hotel building is following. Lodging Econometrics counted 84 hotel projects with 18,014 rooms in the Dominican pipeline in the first quarter of 2026. At FITUR in January 2026 the Ministry of Tourism said financing agreed at the fair should deliver about 10,000 new hotel rooms within three years, not counting real estate and mixed-use projects, and that 4,411 rooms under the CONFOTUR incentive regime were due for completion by the end of 2026.
- La Altagracia (Punta Cana, Bávaro, Cap Cana, Uvero Alto): still the largest resort cluster and the steadiest source of new builds and refurbishments.
- Miches: the ministry reported more than 900 new units on top of the 2,000-plus already there, and Grupo Puntacana and Meliá announced the Paradisus Miches all-inclusive resort.
- Pedernales and Cabo Rojo: the government's new southwest destination. In May 2026 officials said the Cabo Rojo international airport should receive its first aircraft in February 2027, with the first hotels opening later in 2027. Earlier timetables slipped, so treat dates as targets.
For a duct shop, resort work is mostly low pressure rectangular galvanised duct in large quantities: corridor and guest room supply, kitchen and laundry extract, ballrooms, spas and plant rooms. Brand standards from international operators often add their own leakage and noise requirements, so ask for them at tender stage.
Free zone manufacturing
Dominican free zones reached a record 200,134 direct jobs in 2025 and supplied about 62% of national exports in the first half of the year. Medical and pharmaceutical products were the largest group at 33.7% of free zone exports in that half, with electrical and electronic products second at 14%. Medical and pharmaceutical exports from the free zones reached US$2,871.7 million in 2024. New plants and expansions need clean, tightly sealed supply duct for controlled production areas and extract for process equipment; our cleanroom duct guide covers the details.
Santo Domingo commercial and healthcare
In June 2025 the mayor of Santo Domingo Este said the municipality's private investment portfolio exceeded US$3.5 billion, including the Coralia towers of up to 50 floors on Avenida España, with some projects under way and others still in permitting. The government also planned to rebuild six hospitals in 2026, including a trauma and emergency unit at Hospital Luis Bogaert and work at the Ciudad Sanitaria Dr. Luis E. Aybar in the Distrito Nacional. Hospitals need sealed and often stainless duct; see our galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Hurricanes and salt air
Hurricane Fiona made landfall near Boca de Yuma on 19 September 2022, the first direct hurricane hit on the country since Jeanne in 2004, and brought down power lines and roofs in Punta Cana, La Romana and El Seibo. Two practical consequences for duct shops:
- Wind: designers increasingly keep ductwork off the roof. Where exposed rooftop duct cannot be avoided, it needs heavier gauges, closer reinforcement and anchoring designed by the engineer for uplift and lateral load. US guidance written after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, such as FEMA's 2018 advisory on attaching rooftop equipment in high-wind regions, is a useful reference.
- Corrosion: beachfront hotels sit in salt spray. Exposed and pool-area duct is often specified in heavier zinc coatings, aluminium or 316 stainless. See 316L vs 304 stainless for marine use.
Standards and codes for ductwork in the Dominican Republic
We found no Dominican national standard for sheet metal duct construction. A Dominican duct shop builds to what the project specification names, and on projects designed to US practice, which is common with international hotel brands and US-owned free zone manufacturers, that usually means SMACNA and ASHRAE.
- SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards: gauges, seams, transverse joints, reinforcement and hangers. See our SMACNA gauge chart and hangers and supports guide.
- ASHRAE 62.1 and 90.1: ventilation rates and energy design. They set airflows and duct sizes, not construction details.
- Código de Construcción de la República Dominicana (CDCRD): made official by MIVHED Resolution 007-2026 on 10 April 2026 after approval by CONARTED. It has five volumes covering structural and seismic design, soils and foundations, plumbing, electrical and mechanical installations, and architectural criteria including ventilation and fire protection. Compliance is mandatory from 10 April 2027. During the transition year projects may use the previous regulations or the new code, but not a mix of both on one project.
- Seismic and wind design: the country is seismically active as well as hurricane-exposed. Seismic design was previously governed by regulation R-001 (Decree 201-11), and the new code introduces the country's own seismic zoning map. Hanger and bracing details on larger projects follow the structural engineer's loads; ask for them before you price supports.
Leakage requirements from brand standards or the engineer decide how you seal seams and joints; our air leakage classes guide explains the classes.
Importing duct machinery into the Dominican Republic
- Customs duty: assessed on the CIF value in US dollars, converted at the official exchange rate and collected in Dominican pesos by the Dirección General de Aduanas (DGA). Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but the rate depends on the exact subheading. We could not confirm the current rate from an official schedule, so ask your agente de aduanas to classify the machine before you budget.
- ITBIS: the Dominican VAT, charged at the general rate of 18% on imports together with duty.
- CAFTA-DR: the free trade agreement with the United States and Central America removes duty only on goods that originate in member countries. Machines built elsewhere pay the normal rate.
- Incentive regimes: industrial companies registered with Proindustria under Law 392-07 may get ITBIS relief on listed zero-duty machinery, though published summaries differ on whether the relief is full or partial. Free zone companies under Law 8-90 with an ITBIS exemption card can import machinery and equipment free of ITBIS. Check eligibility with a tax adviser before you order.
The main container ports are Caucedo, near Boca Chica east of Santo Domingo, and Río Haina, west of the capital, with Puerto Plata serving the north coast. Tell us the port nearest your workshop when you request a quotation. Our importing guide covers the general paperwork. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and ship with electrical diagrams and component lists.
Power supply: 60 Hz, 208 V, 240 V or 480 V three phase
The Dominican grid runs at 60 Hz with 120 V single phase, US-style. Published voltage tables list 120/208 V, 120/240 V and 277/480 V systems, and smaller premises often have no three phase connection at all, so check with your distributor (Edesur, Edenorte or Edeeste) before you sign a lease. Measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us; we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. A machine built for 50 Hz will run at the wrong speed and may overheat.
Supply reliability matters as much as voltage. A transmission fault caused a nationwide blackout on 11 November 2025, and some areas had outages of up to ten hours in the weeks before. Size a standby generator for at least your PLC-controlled lines, and fit a voltage stabiliser so that restarts and dips do not damage drives. See also duct machine voltage and frequency by country.
Typical Dominican shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Rectangular duct for hotels and commercial buildings
Rectangular galvanised duct is the bulk of the work for resorts, offices and shopping centres, so build the shop around it. A contractor shop supplying its own sites usually starts with a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III, which uncoil, level, bead, notch, shear and form the lock seam in one pass. Add a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints, a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for seams on fittings and short runs, and a pneumatic folder for bends.
A shop bidding for whole resort packages, where one project can mean thousands of square metres of duct on a tight handover date, should look at the Auto Duct Line SBAL-V, which runs from coil to finished panel with little handling. Pair it with a Duct Zipper (TDF) SBHF to close seams quickly, an auto corner making machine and a pneumatic corner inserting machine for TDF corners, and a hydraulic folder for heavier gauges such as exposed rooftop duct. A Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 cuts elbows, transitions and offsets from nested drawings, which is where hotel ductwork takes the most labour.
Free zone, hospital and coastal stainless work
For stainless extract, clean production areas and pool-hall duct, the stainless duct forming machine and the Automatic Stitchwelder SB-ZF1500 cover the seams that a lock cannot.
Round duct
Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings in restaurants and shops, warehouses and free zone factory extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Labour and space
From 1 February 2026 the minimum wage for large private companies is RD$29,988 a month, and in August 2026 the National Wage Committee approved a 20% increase for construction trades under Resolution CNS-04-2026, phased in by category. Skilled sheet metal workers earn more. Rising wages and short resort deadlines both favour automation: an auto duct line replaces much of the manual marking, cutting, notching and folding, so a small crew can supply several sites.
On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Ask us for a layout drawing based on your building before you sign a lease, and leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading. Keep coil and finished duct off the floor and under a roof that is rated for the local wind loads. Location follows the work: the east (Higüey, Verón and Punta Cana) for resorts, Greater Santo Domingo for commercial, hospital and free zone work near the Caucedo and Haina ports, and Santiago for the north. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in the Dominican Republic?
We found no Dominican national standard for sheet metal duct construction. Projects designed to US practice, which is common with international hotel brands and US-owned free zone manufacturers, usually specify the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards for gauges, seams, joints, reinforcement and hangers, with ASHRAE references for ventilation and energy design. Around that sits the new Código de Construcción de la República Dominicana, made official by MIVHED Resolution 007-2026 on 10 April 2026 and mandatory from 10 April 2027, which covers structural and seismic design as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican grid runs at 60 Hz with 120 V single phase. Published voltage tables list 120/208 V, 120/240 V and 277/480 V systems for three phase supply, and smaller premises often have no three phase connection at all. Measure the voltage at your workshop and tell us; we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. Because outages happen, including the nationwide blackout of 11 November 2025, plan for a generator and protect PLC-controlled lines with a stabiliser.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into the Dominican Republic?
Customs duty is charged on the CIF value and collected in Dominican pesos, and ITBIS, the Dominican VAT, is charged at the general rate of 18%. The duty rate depends on the exact HS 8462 subheading of your machine, so ask your agente de aduanas to classify it and confirm the rate. CAFTA-DR preferences apply only to goods that originate in member countries. Companies registered under the industrial competitiveness law (Proindustria, Law 392-07) or operating under the free zone law (Law 8-90) may qualify for ITBIS relief on machinery, depending on their registration and the goods.
Where is ductwork demand in the Dominican Republic coming from in 2026?
The biggest source is hotel and resort building: the tourism ministry expects about 10,000 new hotel rooms from financing agreed at FITUR 2026 over three years, in Punta Cana, Cap Cana, Miches and other destinations, with the Cabo Rojo airport in Pedernales due to receive its first aircraft in February 2027. Free zone manufacturing, led by medical devices and electrical products, adds controlled-environment and extract work. Santo Domingo adds towers, shopping centres and hospital reconstruction.
How do hurricanes affect duct fabrication in the Dominican Republic?
Hurricane Fiona made landfall near Boca de Yuma in September 2022 and damaged Punta Cana, La Romana and El Seibo. For a duct shop, wind exposure means avoiding exposed rooftop ductwork where possible, and where it cannot be avoided, using heavier gauges, closer reinforcement and anchoring designed by the engineer for wind uplift and lateral load. Salt air on the coast also pushes specifications toward heavier zinc coatings, aluminium or 316 stainless for exposed and pool-area duct.
Which machines should a new Dominican duct shop start with?
A shop supplying hotels and commercial buildings mostly makes rectangular duct, so start with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a TDF flange former, a Pittsburgh lockformer and a folder. Add a duct zipper and corner machines as volume grows, and a plasma table for fittings. Add a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
