Why Ecuador in 2026
Ecuador uses the US dollar, so machine quotations and project budgets carry no exchange-rate risk. The work comes from four places: commercial building, private hospitals, shrimp and food plants on the coast, and mining in the south.
Commercial building in Guayaquil and Quito
Shopping centres are the clearest signal. In April 2026 the national shopping centre sector reported six strategic projects coming into operation between 2025 and 2026, with combined investment of about USD 340 million and more than 200,000 m² of lettable area. They include Vivantino Mall in Daule (about USD 95 million), on the edge of Guayaquil, Capital Shopping in Portoviejo (about USD 100 million), Mall del Alto in Cuenca, and San Luis Town Center in Quito, due to open at the end of 2026. Each is a large rectangular duct package, and new development around Guayaquil keeps moving out to Samborondón, Daule and the vía a la Costa.
Hospitals
Private healthcare is investing. Hospital Metropolitano started building a new campus in Cumbayá, in the valleys east of Quito, in August 2025: about USD 95 million for 75 beds, 13 intensive care beds and 6 operating theatres, due to open in December 2026. On the public side, the IESS approved about USD 26 million for a new basic hospital in Cayambe, north of Quito, with works planned to start in 2026. Operating theatres, intensive care and laboratories need tightly sealed, often stainless ductwork; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Shrimp and food processing
Shrimp is now Ecuador's largest export. Exports passed USD 8.4 billion in 2025, about 20% more than in 2024, according to the Ministry of Production, and volume reached about 3,074 million pounds. More of it is now frozen and processed before export. Cold rooms themselves are built from insulated panels, but the plants around them need process hall ventilation, steam and cooking exhaust, make-up air, and air conditioning for packing areas and offices. Wet, washdown areas often call for stainless or aluminium duct rather than galvanised.
Mining in the south
Ecuador has two large mines in production, both in Zamora Chinchipe: Fruta del Norte, which produced 498,315 ounces of gold in 2025, and the Mirador copper mine, which processes about 60,000 tonnes of ore a day. A second phase at Mirador would take that to about 140,000 tonnes a day by 2028, but in May 2026 it was still waiting on a contract addendum with the state. Six further projects, with projected investment above USD 12 billion according to the Central Bank, are at earlier stages. Process plants, workshops and camps need ventilation, dust extraction and air conditioning ductwork. Treat mining as a lead to follow, not a sure order book.
Standards and codes for ductwork in Ecuador
Ecuador has no national duct construction standard of its own. In practice a duct shop builds to what the mechanical designer's specification names, which for sheet metal ductwork is usually SMACNA, inside a framework of Ecuadorian building and fire rules.
- SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards: the usual reference for gauges, seams, transverse joints, reinforcement and hangers. Quito HVAC contractors cite SMACNA, NFPA and ASHRAE alongside fire service (Cuerpo de Bomberos) requirements. See our gauge chart and hangers and supports guide.
- ASHRAE: ASHRAE 62.1 for ventilation and ASHRAE 90.1 for energy are the common design references, and ASHRAE has an Ecuador chapter.
- NEC, Norma Ecuatoriana de la Construcción: coordinated by the housing ministry (MIDUVI), updated in 2015 and mandatory nationwide, in three parts: structural safety (NEC-SE), habitability and health (NEC-HS) and basic services (NEC-SB).
- NEC-SE-DS, seismic design: Ecuador is a high seismic risk country. Ecuadorian university research has noted that the NEC lacks a dedicated standard for non-structural elements such as ducts, so on seismic projects follow the hanger and bracing details in the specification and have the structural engineer approve them. A 2024 proposal to update NEC-SE-DS is also under study.
- NEC-HS-CI, fire safety: sets minimum life safety requirements for buildings, enforced through fire service approval. For a duct shop this affects fire dampers, smoke extract ducts and penetrations; see our fire and smoke damper guide.
- NEC-HS-EE, energy efficiency: pushes designers toward better insulated, tighter duct systems; our air leakage classes guide explains what that means for seams and sealing.
- Materials: galvanised coil is commonly specified to ASTM A653, and some clients name an NTE INEN product standard instead. Check which document your client names before you order coil.
Importing duct machinery into Ecuador
- Registration: the importer needs a RUC from the SRI, registration as a foreign trade operator in SENAE's ECUAPASS system and an electronic signature token to transmit the import declaration. An agente de aduana is not compulsory but is strongly recommended.
- Customs duty (ad valorem): Ecuador's duties on machinery are low. WTO data published by the U.S. Commercial Service in 2025 give an average applied rate of 2.6% for mechanical machinery, with 72.7% of tariff lines duty free. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but the rate depends on the full subheading, and COMEX can change rates by resolution, so ask your broker to classify the machine. We do not quote a figure here.
- FODINFA: a 0.5% levy on the CIF value of imports.
- IVA: 15%, the general rate since 1 April 2024 under Executive Decree 198, charged on the import value plus the other import charges.
- ISD (Impuesto a la Salida de Divisas): payments abroad, including paying a foreign machine supplier, attract ISD at a general rate of 5% in 2026. Executive Decree 272 of 30 December 2025 set a reduced 2.5% rate for productive-sector subheadings, listed by the Ministry of Production in Agreement MPCEI-2026-0003-A of January 2026. Check whether your machine's subheading is on that list, and ask your tax adviser whether an investment contract could exempt it.
- INEN: since 2018, when COMEX Resolution 24 repealed Resolution 116 of 2013, the INEN certificate of recognition is no longer a routine import document. It is needed only for goods covered by a specific technical regulation (RTE INEN). We could not find one that covers sheet metal forming machines, but ask your broker to check. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and ship with electrical diagrams and component lists.
Most container cargo for Ecuador lands at the Guayaquil terminals or the deep-water port at Posorja. Tell us the port and city of your workshop when you request a quotation. Our importing guide covers the general paperwork.
Power supply: 60 Hz, and plan for outages
Ecuador's grid runs at 60 Hz. Commercial buildings are commonly supplied at 220/127 V three phase through 13.8 kV distribution transformers, and industrial motors sold in Ecuador are typically rated 220/440 V or 220/380/440 V at 60 Hz. Larger plants may have their own transformer and a different low voltage, so confirm the supply with your distribution company (CNEL or the local Empresa Eléctrica), measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us. We wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit.
Two Ecuadorian details matter. Quito sits at about 2,850 m, and standard motor ratings assume installation up to 1,000 m, so tell us your altitude and we check motor, drive and hydraulic cooling margins. And supply has been unreliable: during the 2024 drought, cuts reached up to 14 hours a day, and in September 2026 the energy minister announced one day a week of disconnection for the 145 to 150 largest industrial consumers, mostly on the coast, to protect the Mazar reservoir until December. If your shop will run from a generator, send us its rating so we can check motor starting loads, and protect PLC controls on an auto duct line with a UPS. See duct machine power requirements and voltage and frequency by country.
Typical Ecuadorian shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Rectangular duct shop for commercial and hospital work
Rectangular duct is most of the work in Ecuadorian malls, offices, hospitals and plants, so build the shop around it. The core is a coil-fed line that straightens, beads, notches, shears and forms the panel in one pass:
- Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II: the entry line, 0.5 to 2.0 mm sheet in 1,250 or 1,550 mm widths at up to 18 m/min.
- Auto Duct Line SBAL-III: two electrical feeding units with hydraulic notching and shearing, for shops that switch often between gauges and coil widths.
- Auto Duct Line SBAL-V: a U-shape automatic line from coil to finished panel, producing TDF, angle flange or drive cleat profiles. The line for shops chasing mall, hospital and plant packages.
Around the line, add the closing and joining machines:
For a real example of a complete rectangular shop, see Airtemp in Canberra, which installed eight machines in September 2026.
Food plant and hospital work
For stainless washdown areas, kitchen extract and hospital duct, the stainless duct forming machine and the Automatic Stitchwelder SB-ZF1500 cover the welded seams that a lock cannot.
Round duct
Once the rectangular shop is running, spiral duct is the natural next step for exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and plant extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on the ends. Kavanagh Industries in Sydney added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Labour and space
Ecuador's unified basic wage (salario básico unificado) for 2026 is USD 482 a month, up USD 12 or 2.55% on 2025, as agreed by the national labour and wages council. Employers also pay the statutory bonuses and IESS social security contributions, and skilled sheet metal workers and machine operators earn well above the minimum. At these wages the case for automation is output and consistency rather than headcount: an auto duct line lets a small crew meet a mall or hospital programme with every panel square, and reduces dependence on a few experienced tinsmiths.
On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Ask us for a layout drawing before you sign a lease, and leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and loading. Location follows the work: greater Guayaquil for the coast, where most commercial and processing plant work is, and Quito for the highlands. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in Ecuador?
Ecuador has no national duct construction standard of its own. Mechanical designers and HVAC contractors commonly work to American references: the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards for gauges, seams, joints, reinforcement and hangers, ASHRAE standards for ventilation and energy, and NFPA for fire protection. Ecuadorian rules sit around that: the Norma Ecuatoriana de la Construcción (NEC), which is mandatory nationwide and includes NEC-SE-DS for seismic design, NEC-HS-CI for fire safety and NEC-HS-EE for energy efficiency, plus the review of the local fire service (Cuerpo de Bomberos). Always build to the documents named in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Ecuador?
Ecuador's grid runs at 60 Hz. Commercial buildings are commonly supplied at 220/127 V three phase, and industrial motors sold in Ecuador are typically rated 220/440 V or 220/380/440 V at 60 Hz. Larger plants may have their own transformer and a different low voltage, so confirm with your distribution company and measure the three phase voltage at your workshop. A machine built for 50 Hz will not run correctly without changes; tell us the voltage and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. If you are in Quito, at about 2,850 m, tell us the altitude too.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Ecuador?
Imports pay ad valorem customs duty for the exact tariff subheading, a 0.5% FODINFA levy on the CIF value, and IVA at 15%, the general rate since 1 April 2024. Ecuador's duties on machinery are low: WTO data published by the U.S. Commercial Service give an average of 2.6% for mechanical machinery, with about 73% of tariff lines duty free, but your rate depends on the full subheading, so ask your agente de aduana to classify the machine. Paying the supplier abroad also attracts the Impuesto a la Salida de Divisas (ISD), whose general rate is 5% in 2026; Decree 272 set a reduced 2.5% rate for productive-sector subheadings listed by the Ministry of Production, so check whether your machine's subheading is on that list.
Do I need an INEN certificate to import a duct machine into Ecuador?
Not as a routine document. In 2018 COMEX Resolution 24 repealed Resolution 116 of 2013, which had required an INEN certificate of recognition as a supporting document for customs declarations on listed goods. INEN conformity is now needed only for goods covered by a specific technical regulation (RTE INEN). We could not find an RTE INEN that covers sheet metal forming machines as such, but regulations change, so ask your agente de aduana to check the subheading before the machine ships. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and come with electrical diagrams and component lists.
Where is ductwork demand in Ecuador coming from in 2026?
Most work is in greater Guayaquil, including Samborondón and Daule, and in Quito and its valleys. The main sources are private hospitals, such as the Hospital Metropolitano's new campus in Cumbayá, due to open in December 2026; new shopping centres, including San Luis Town Center in Quito and Vivantino Mall in Daule; shrimp and food processing plants serving a shrimp export industry worth more than USD 8.4 billion in 2025; and plant and camp buildings at the large mines in Zamora Chinchipe.
Which machines should a new Ecuadorian duct shop start with?
Start with rectangular duct, which is most of the work in Ecuadorian commercial and hospital buildings: a Rectangular Duct Line II or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III, a TDF flange former, a Pittsburgh lockformer and a folder. Add a duct zipper, corner machines and a plasma table as volume grows, or go straight to an SBAL-V line for large packages. Add a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
