Why Jordan in 2026
Jordan is small by Gulf standards, but it offers a duct shop four things: a pipeline of public hospitals, a growing digital and logistics cluster in Aqaba, a large new city that started site work this year, and close ties to Gulf projects that let a well-equipped shop sell beyond the domestic market.
Hospitals
The clearest example is Madaba Hospital in the Ma'in area of Madaba Governorate, Jordan's first government hospital built under a public-private partnership. When the health and investment ministers inspected it on 30 June 2026, the state news agency Petra reported a built-up area of more than 54,000 m², an initial 260 beds expandable to 360, a completed first phase and a second phase about to start. It will have operating theatres, intensive care, dialysis and laboratories, and is described as one of the Kingdom's largest green buildings.
Further out, the health minister said in 2023 that civil, military and private providers would add about 2,000 beds over seven years, including a 330-bed hospital on Airport Road financed by the Saudi-Jordanian Investment Fund and a 400-bed military hospital in Zarqa governorate whose construction had started. Operating theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories need tightly sealed, often stainless duct; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Aqaba: port, data and the special economic zone
Aqaba is Jordan's only seaport and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) around it has its own tax and customs regime, covered below. The Aqaba Container Terminal reported handling one million TEU in 2025. In October 2025 the Crown Prince inaugurated the Aqaba Digital Hub, reported as the Kingdom's largest data centre, with about 17,000 m² and an operational capacity of up to 12 MW, plus Jordan's first open-access submarine cable landing station. Data halls themselves often need little duct, while their electrical rooms, offices and smoke extract need plenty; our data centre duct manufacturing guide explains the split.
Amra City and commercial Amman
Amra City is a 25-year new city project on about 500,000 dunums of state land, meant to ease pressure on Amman and Zarqa. The Jordan Times reported in April 2026 that land preparation had begun, with a first phase of 40,000 dunums including an exhibition and conference centre due in 2027, an entertainment city due in 2028 and a sports city with an international football stadium due in late 2029. Exhibition halls, arenas and stadium hospitality areas are heavy users of large rectangular and spiral duct. Day to day, though, most Jordanian duct shops live on offices, hotels, malls, apartment towers with central plant, schools and factories in Amman, Zarqa and Irbid.
Work for Gulf projects
Jordanian engineering talent is already embedded in the Gulf. The Jordan Engineers Association runs liaison committees for members in Riyadh, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, and in 2016 the public works minister said about half of Jordan's working engineers were based in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Goods move by road: the Al-Omari crossing, 155 km east of Amman, is the main freight gateway to Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia was the second largest Arab destination for industrial exports from Zarqa and Mafraq in the first five months of 2026. A Jordanian contractor running Gulf MEP packages must fabricate to the destination project's specification and inspection regime.
Standards and codes for ductwork in Jordan
Jordan's building codes are issued by the Jordan National Building Council with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and approved by the Council of Ministers. We could not find a Jordanian code that sets sheet metal duct construction details such as gauges, seams and reinforcement, so a Jordanian shop builds to what the project specification names.
- Jordanian National Building Codes: the series includes a natural ventilation code, a safety systems code and an Energy Efficient Building Code updated in 2010. Official statements in Jordan have said green building codes are not yet mandatory, but large public jobs such as the Madaba hospital, billed as a green building, raise the bar on insulation and leakage. See our insulation guide and air leakage classes guide.
- SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards: specifications written to American practice, common across the Middle East, use SMACNA for gauges, seams, transverse joints, reinforcement and hangers. Gulf clients usually expect the same. See our SMACNA gauge chart and seal classes guide.
- ASHRAE: used for design data, ventilation rates and equipment ratings. It drives airflows and duct sizes rather than construction details.
- Jordanian Standards (JS) from JSMO: the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization publishes standards numbered JS, then a number and year. Products must follow the Jordanian standard where one exists and the corresponding international standard where it does not. Check which document your client names for galvanised coil; our coil specification guide explains the grades.
- DW/144: consultants trained on British practice sometimes specify DW/144 instead of SMACNA. See our DW/144 guide.
Fire dampers, smoke extract and car park ventilation follow the project's fire strategy and the authority having jurisdiction; check them with the fire consultant early. Our fire and smoke damper guide covers the fabrication side.
Importing duct machinery into Jordan
- General sales tax: Jordan's general sales tax works like VAT and is charged at 16% on imports of goods as well as local sales.
- Customs duty: rates vary by type and origin of the goods under the Customs Tariff. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but the rate depends on the full tariff line, so ask your clearing agent to classify the machine. We do not quote a figure here.
- Investment Environment Law No. 21 of 2022: for economic activities outside the development and free zones, the law exempts fixed assets, production requirements and spare parts from customs duty, and the Council of Ministers keeps a list of items that can be taxed at zero. Whether a duct machine qualifies, and how sales tax is treated, depends on your registration and the current list, so confirm with the Ministry of Investment and your clearing agent before the machine ships.
- Aqaba Special Economic Zone: ASEZA states that registered enterprises pay 5% income tax on net profit and that imports into the zone are exempt from customs duty (vehicles excluded), and the zero sales tax rate applies to supplies to the ASEZ. Sources differ on which zone law currently governs the details, and the benefits are tied to activity inside the zone, so if your machines will work in Amman ask ASEZA and your broker how duty and tax apply.
- JSMO conformity: JSMO issues mandatory technical regulations for products that affect health and safety, including electrical equipment, and imported goods covered by them are verified by laboratory testing in Jordan. We could not confirm that a duct forming machine falls under a mandatory regulation, so ask your clearing agent or JSMO with the HS code. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and ship with electrical diagrams and component lists.
Machines arrive by container through Aqaba. Tell us whether the machine stays in the zone or travels on to Amman, Zarqa or Irbid when you request a quotation, and see our importing guide for the general paperwork.
Power supply: 230/400 V, 50 Hz
Jordan runs at 50 Hz, with 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase, in line with the IEC 60038 standard voltage. Machines wired for 380 to 415 V three phase at 50 Hz suit most Jordanian workshops; measure the supply at your building and tell us before we wire the machine. Summers are hot, especially in Aqaba and the Jordan Valley, so plan ventilation for control cabinets and hydraulic oil, and keep voltage stable for PLC-controlled lines. See duct machine voltage and frequency by country and our power requirements guide.
Typical Jordanian shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Contractor shop, rectangular duct first
For a contractor shop serving offices, hotels, hospitals and malls, rectangular galvanised duct is most of the tonnage, so build the shop around it. A practical core is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II (0.5 to 2.0 mm sheet, 1250 or 1550 mm wide) or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III with electrical feeding and hydraulic notching and shearing. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints, a Duct Zipper SBHF-1.5×1500TDF to close seams on 0.8 to 1.5 mm sheet, and a pneumatic folder for fittings. An auto corner making machine and a pneumatic corner mounting machine take TDF corner work off the bench. If a consultant asks for angle iron joints instead, read our TDF vs angle flange guide.
Volume shop for hospitals, Amra City and Gulf packages
Shops bidding on hospital wings, exhibition halls or Gulf MEP packages need output and repeatable quality that an inspector can check against SMACNA. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape line that runs from coil to finished panel for TDF, angle flange and drive cleat duct. A Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 cuts fittings from nested drawings, and a hydraulic folder handles heavier gauges and long bends. Flat-packed panels and fittings also travel better by truck to Saudi Arabia than assembled duct. For a real example of a full rectangular shop, see Airtemp Canberra, which installed eight machines in September 2026.
Round duct
Spiral duct suits car parks, warehouses, exposed ceilings, arenas and industrial extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. Kavanagh Industries in Sydney added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Hospital and industrial work
For stainless extract and heavier round duct, the stainless duct forming machine and the Automatic Stitchwelder SB-ZF1500 cover seams that a lock cannot.
Labour and space
Jordan's national minimum wage has been JD 290 a month since 1 January 2025 and is set to stay there until the end of 2027, with a lower rate for the garment sector. Skilled sheet metal workers and line operators earn more. Here the case for automation is less about wages than about consistency and capacity: an auto duct line makes the same panel the same way every time, which matters when a Gulf consultant inspects seams, gauges and sealing. See our labour and throughput guide.
On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading. Location follows the work: Amman and Zarqa for most domestic jobs and the road east to the Saudi border, Aqaba if you want the zone's terms and are close to the port. Ask us for a layout drawing based on your building; our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in Jordan?
We could not find a Jordanian code that sets sheet metal duct construction details such as gauges, seams and reinforcement. The Jordanian National Building Codes, issued by the Jordan National Building Council with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, cover subjects such as natural ventilation, safety systems and energy efficiency. For the ductwork itself, specifications written to American practice use the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards, with ASHRAE references for design, and some consultants write DW/144 instead. Materials may be specified to a Jordanian Standard (JS) from JSMO or to the corresponding international standard. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Jordan?
Jordan runs at 50 Hz, with 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase. Machines wired for 380 to 415 V three phase at 50 Hz suit most Jordanian workshops. Measure the voltage at your building and tell us before we wire the machine, and plan cabinet and hydraulic oil cooling for hot summers, especially in Aqaba.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Jordan?
Imports pay general sales tax at 16%, plus customs duty for the exact tariff line. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but the rate depends on the full tariff line, so ask your clearing agent to confirm it. Under the Investment Environment Law No. 21 of 2022, fixed assets, production requirements and spare parts for an economic activity outside the development and free zones can be exempt from customs duty, and the Council of Ministers keeps a list of items that can be taxed at zero. Confirm eligibility with the Ministry of Investment before the machine ships.
Is it worth setting up in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone?
It can be. ASEZA states that registered enterprises pay 5% income tax on net profit and that imports into the zone are exempt from customs duty, vehicles excluded, and the zero sales tax rate applies to supplies to the zone. The benefits are tied to activity inside the zone, and sources differ on which zone law governs the details, so if your duct will mostly go to Amman or to Saudi Arabia, ask ASEZA and your broker how duty and tax apply before you choose the location.
Where is ductwork demand in Jordan coming from in 2026?
The main sources are hospitals, such as the Madaba public-private partnership hospital with 260 beds expandable to 360; Aqaba, with the Aqaba Digital Hub data centre of up to 12 MW and a busy container port; Amra City, a new city whose first phase includes an exhibition centre, an entertainment city and a sports city with a stadium; commercial building in Amman, Zarqa and Irbid; and Gulf projects run by Jordanian contractors and engineers.
Which machines should a new Jordanian duct shop start with?
A contractor shop making rectangular duct for offices, hotels, hospitals and malls usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former, a duct zipper for seam closing and a folder. Add a corner machine and a plasma table as fittings volume grows, and a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
