Why Malaysia in 2026
Two sectors are driving the extra ductwork: data centres and semiconductor plants. Both need large volumes of sealed, accurate duct on tight programmes. Ordinary commercial and industrial building carries on underneath.
Data centres in Johor and Greater Kuala Lumpur
JLL figures reported by the New Straits Times in April 2026 put Johor at 850 MW of operational data centre capacity, with 1,800 MW under construction and 2,700 MW in the pipeline. Greater Kuala Lumpur had 182 MW operating, 615 MW under construction and 785 MW planned. National capacity of about 900 MW at the end of 2025 was projected to reach 2,055 MW by the end of 2026.
Named campuses include:
- AirTrunk, Iskandar Puteri: JHB1 (over 150 MW) went live in July 2024, and in February 2025 AirTrunk announced JHB2, scalable to more than 270 MW, with a combined cost for the two of RM9.7 billion.
- YTL Green Data Center Park, Kulai: planned capacity of up to 1.2 GW. In August 2026 YTL Power also agreed with JLand Group to develop a gigawatt-scale campus at STeP West in Sedenak, on about 58.7 hectares with an option on a further 161.9 hectares.
- Elmina Business Park, Selangor: Sime Darby Property is developing two hyperscale data centres for a Google-affiliated company, the first due in 2026 and the second, a RM5.6 billion project on 77 acres, in 2027.
White space is often cooled by in-row or room units with little ductwork, but electrical and battery rooms, generator halls, offices and smoke extract all need sheet metal, and on a 100 MW campus the volume is large. Our data centre duct manufacturing guide covers the details.
Semiconductor fabs and cleanrooms in Kulim and Penang
Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah hosts four wafer fab operators, Infineon, Osram, SilTerra and Fuji Electric, and its developer scheduled physical works on a 190-hectare Phase 5 to start in 2026. Infineon opened the first phase of a 200 mm silicon carbide power fab at its Kulim 3 site in August 2024 and plans up to EUR 5 billion more for a second phase. In October 2026 IJM Construction won a RM1.23 billion design and build contract from AT&S for a production building, a central utility building and a waste water plant in the park, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Across the bridge, Chipbond opened an advanced packaging and test plant at Batu Kawan, Penang, in February 2026, an investment of close to USD 200 million, and in October 2026 PEN SJ Electronics leased a 3.44-hectare site in Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 for an advanced packaging facility. Cleanrooms, process exhaust and central utility buildings need tightly sealed duct, often stainless. See our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Commercial and industrial building
Offices, malls, hospitals, warehouses and factories in the Klang Valley, Johor Bahru and Penang still make up the everyday order book of most Malaysian duct shops: mostly low and medium pressure rectangular duct, where an auto duct line pays back fastest.
Standards and codes for ductwork in Malaysia
Malaysia does not have a national sheet metal duct construction standard that fabricators work to day to day. Specifications from Malaysian M&E consultants generally name either the American or the British document, and the shop builds to whichever one the project calls up.
- SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards: the usual reference for gauges, seams, transverse joints such as TDF, reinforcement and hangers on projects designed to US practice. See our gauge chart and hangers and supports guide.
- DW/144: the UK specification for sheet metal ductwork published by BESA, now in its 2016 third edition. Some Malaysian specifications call it up instead of SMACNA, or alongside it. Our DW/144 guide and standards comparison show where it differs from SMACNA.
- MS 1525: the Malaysian code of practice on energy efficiency and use of renewable energy for non-residential buildings, now in its 2019 third revision. A 2012 amendment to By-law 38A of the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 requires new or renovated non-residential buildings with more than 4,000 m² of air-conditioned space to be designed to MS 1525 for the building envelope and to have an energy management system. Not every state applies the by-laws in the same way, so check locally. Tighter, better insulated duct follows from this; see our air leakage classes guide and insulation guide.
- Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2024 (Act 861): in force since 1 January 2025 in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan. Large energy users, at or above 21,600 GJ a year, must appoint a registered energy manager, and listed buildings face energy efficiency ratings and labels.
- Fire and smoke control: smoke spill and staircase pressurisation systems are tested by Bomba, the Fire and Rescue Department, before a building is handed over. MS 1472 covers pressurisation and MS 1780 covers smoke extraction. See our fire and smoke damper guide.
CIDB registration
Local and foreign contractors who carry out or bid for construction projects in Malaysia must be registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). Grades run from G1, for tenders up to RM200,000, through G4 (up to RM3 million) to G7 with no limit. Air conditioning and air distribution work sits under the mechanical specialisation M01. If your shop installs duct on site you will normally need it. If you only fabricate and supply duct to registered contractors, ask CIDB whether your work counts as construction work.
Importing duct machinery into Malaysia
- Import duty: published tariff data lists Malaysia's import duty on metal forming machinery under HS heading 8462 (for example subheading 8462.29) at 0%. The rate depends on the full tariff code, so ask your forwarder to confirm the classification before you budget.
- Sales tax (SST): from 1 July 2025 Malaysia expanded the scope of sales tax, and machinery and equipment used in the industrial and commercial sectors became taxable at 5%, where much of it was previously exempt. Agricultural and livestock machinery stayed exempt, and a 10% rate applies to other listed goods. Sales tax is collected at import.
- Exemptions: companies endorsed by MIDA can apply for import duty and sales tax exemption on machinery and equipment used directly in manufacturing; the first step is a MIDA confirmation letter (Surat Pengesahan MIDA). Customs revised its list of eligible machinery in September 2025. Whether a duct fabrication shop qualifies depends on how it is licensed, so check with your tax adviser.
- Service tax on construction: separately, since 1 July 2025 construction services carry 6% service tax once taxable construction services pass RM1.5 million in 12 months, with residential work exempt.
We could not find a Malaysian product certification that a duct forming machine itself must carry before import. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and ship with electrical diagrams and component lists. The main container ports are Port Klang for the Klang Valley, Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port for the south, and Penang Port for the north, so tell us the port nearest your workshop when you request a quotation. Our importing guide covers the general paperwork.
Power supply: 50 Hz, 400/230 V or 415/240 V
Malaysia runs at 50 Hz. TNB, the utility in Peninsular Malaysia, describes its low voltage network as 400/230 V, three phase four wire, at 50 Hz plus or minus 1%, with steady-state voltage allowed to vary between minus 6% and plus 10%. Older nameplates and TNB's own supply tables still refer to 415 V three phase and 240 V single phase. A standard 50 Hz Taokron machine suits either. Measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us, and we set the motors, drives and control transformer to match. Sabah and Sarawak have their own utilities, so check with them for sites there. See also duct machine voltage and frequency by country.
Typical Malaysian shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Contractor shop, rectangular duct first
Most Malaysian duct shops are built around rectangular duct, and that is where we start. A practical set for a contractor shop is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III, which feed, notch and shear sheet ready for forming. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for the transverse joints SMACNA and DW/144 projects call for, a Duct Zipper SBHF-1.5×1500TDF to close seams automatically, a pneumatic folder for the bends, and a pneumatic corner mounting machine to fit TDF corners. That set covers straight duct, TDF joints and simple fittings with a small crew.
Volume shop for data centres and fabs
Shops chasing data centre and semiconductor packages need output and repeatable quality over thousands of square metres, often with tight leakage targets. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape line that runs from coil to formed duct with TDF, angle flange or drive cleat ends, and it is the machine we recommend first for this work. An auto corner making machine keeps up with its corner demand, a Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 cuts fittings from nested drawings, and a hydraulic folder handles heavier gauges and long bends.
Round duct
Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and process exhaust. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Cleanroom and stainless work
For stainless exhaust and cleanroom duct, the stainless duct forming machine and the Automatic Stitchwelder SB-ZF1500 cover the welded seams that a lock cannot.
Labour and space
Malaysia's minimum wage has been RM1,700 a month since 1 February 2025, and since 1 August 2025 for employers with fewer than five workers. In Budget 2027, tabled on 9 October 2026, the government announced a rise to RM2,000 from June 2027, with businesses whose sales are below RM50 million exempt for now. Rising wages and scarce skilled hands both argue for automation: an auto duct line replaces most of the manual marking, cutting, notching and folding, so a small crew can supply several sites. Our labour and throughput guide runs the numbers.
On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Ask us for a layout drawing based on your building before you sign a lease, and leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and lorry loading. Location follows the work: Kulai, Sedenak, Iskandar Puteri and Pasir Gudang for Johor's data centres, the Klang Valley for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor projects, and the Kulim and Batu Kawan area for the northern fabs. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in Malaysia?
Malaysia has no national sheet metal duct construction standard that fabricators work to day to day. Project specifications written by Malaysian M&E consultants generally name the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards or the UK specification DW/144, and the duct shop builds gauges, seams, joints, reinforcement and hangers to whichever document is named. Around that sit Malaysian rules: MS 1525 for energy efficiency in non-residential buildings, called up by By-law 38A of the Uniform Building By-Laws for larger air-conditioned buildings; the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2024; and the fire and smoke control requirements tested by Bomba, with MS 1472 for pressurisation and MS 1780 for smoke extraction. Always build to the documents in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Malaysia?
Malaysia runs at 50 Hz. TNB, the utility in Peninsular Malaysia, describes its low voltage network as 400/230 V three phase four wire, and 415/240 V is still widely quoted and found on older equipment. A standard 50 Hz Taokron machine suits this supply. Measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us, and we set the motors, drives and control transformer to match. Sabah and Sarawak have their own utilities, so check with them for sites there.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Malaysia?
Import duty on metal forming machinery under HS heading 8462 is listed at 0% in published tariff data, but confirm the full tariff code with your forwarder. Since 1 July 2025 the expanded sales tax has applied to machinery used in the industrial and commercial sectors at 5%, where it was previously exempt. Companies endorsed by MIDA can apply for import duty and sales tax exemption on machinery used directly in manufacturing, starting with a MIDA confirmation letter. Check eligibility with your tax adviser before you order.
Do I need CIDB registration to fabricate or install ductwork in Malaysia?
Local and foreign contractors who carry out or bid for construction projects in Malaysia must be registered with CIDB. Grades run from G1, for tenders up to RM200,000, to G7 with no limit, and air conditioning and air distribution work falls under the mechanical specialisation M01. If your shop installs duct on site you will normally need it. If you only fabricate and sell duct to registered contractors, check with CIDB whether your work counts as construction work.
Where is ductwork demand in Malaysia coming from in 2026?
The biggest new source is data centres. JLL reported in April 2026 that Johor had 850 MW of data centre capacity operating and 1,800 MW under construction, with campuses in Iskandar Puteri, Kulai and Sedenak, while Greater Kuala Lumpur had 615 MW under construction, including the Elmina Business Park projects in Selangor. Semiconductor and electronics plants in Kulim Hi-Tech Park and Penang need cleanroom, exhaust and utility building ductwork, and offices, malls, hospitals and factories in the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang provide steady everyday work.
Which machines should a new Malaysian duct shop start with?
A contractor shop making rectangular duct usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former, a duct zipper for seam closing and a folder. Shops chasing data centre and fab packages add an SBAL-V auto duct line, an auto corner machine and a plasma table. Add a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
