Why Bahrain in 2026
Bahrain's construction demand rests on government housing, large public projects around Sakhir and Askar in the south, utilities, industry and data infrastructure. Much of the bigger pipeline is still at design or tender stage, so the steady work is schools, health centres, villas, offices and plant rooms. The year has not been easy: since 28 February 2026 Iranian missile and drone strikes have hit sites in Bahrain, including Mina Salman port, Bapco facilities and an AWS data centre site, and container lines have largely stayed out of the Strait of Hormuz. Plan lead times with that in mind.
Housing towns and new island cities
Government housing is the most dependable source of ductwork. At the Bahrain Smart Cities Summit in June 2026, Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna Al Romaihi named five model cities: Salman Town, Hidd Housing Town, Khalifa Town, Sitra Housing Town and the Ramli district. King Hamad has directed the ministry to work toward 50,000 new housing units, and the minister said the focus is now on integrated communities with schools, healthcare and commercial centres, not houses alone. Each district centre, school and clinic needs ducted air conditioning, most of it rectangular sheet metal duct.
Further out is the Strategic Projects Plan announced in 2021, worth about USD 30 billion, which includes five new cities on reclaimed islands that would add more than 60% to Bahrain's land area. The largest, Fasht Al Jarim, is planned at about 183 km². Treat these as long-term leads: MEED reported in September 2026 that a lowest bidder had emerged for a reclamation consultancy, which shows how early the work still is.
Sakhir and the airport
- Bahrain International Sports City, Sakhir: next to the Bahrain International Circuit, on a site of about 745,000 m². Phase 1A is a stadium of up to 46,000 seats with an arena building. Populous holds a BD 5 million design and tender documents contract, and about twenty contractors prequalified after the deadline closed in September 2026. The stadium and arena will need large volumes of duct once the main contract is let.
- Exhibition World Bahrain: the Sakhir exhibition centre was among Bahrain's winners in the 2026 MEED Projects Awards.
- Bahrain International Airport: the passenger terminal opened in January 2021, and the airport handled about 9.74 million passengers in 2025, up 4.2% on 2024. Expect fit-out and replacement work rather than one large package.
Hospitals
The King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Medical City of the Arabian Gulf University, near Askar and Durrat Al Bahrain, is valued at about USD 260 million, covers about 82,000 m² and is planned for more than 280 beds. It is funded by a Saudi grant under the supervision of the Saudi Fund for Development. Operating theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories need tightly sealed, often stainless ductwork; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Data centres, utilities and industry
- Data centres: AWS opened its Middle East (Bahrain) Region in 2019 with three Availability Zones. Beyon commissioned its Batelco White Space data centre, about 6,000 m², in November 2025 as part of its 140,000 m² Data Oasis campus in southern Bahrain. White space is often cooled with little ductwork, but electrical rooms, battery rooms, offices and smoke extract all need sheet metal. See our data centre duct guide.
- Power, water and roads: MEED reported in 2026 that Bahrain was evaluating bids for the 1.2 GW Sitra power and water plant, had awarded Sitra 400 kV grid contracts, and had seven bidders for a highway upgrade. Plant rooms, control buildings and substations all need ventilation.
- Refinery and industry: the Bapco Refining Program control building was also a 2026 MEED Projects Awards winner. Industrial extract favours shops with welding and round duct capacity.
The causeway: Bahrain as a base for the Eastern Province
The King Fahd Causeway is Bahrain's only road link to Saudi Arabia and the route to Al Khobar, Dammam and beyond. A Bahraini workshop can bid for work on both sides, and machines can arrive by road from Saudi ports when sea routes into Bahrain are slow. Both countries are in the GCC customs union, but trucks still clear customs at the causeway and queues can be long. Traffic was briefly suspended as a precaution in April 2026. A second crossing, the King Hamad Causeway, is planned as a 25 km road and rail link estimated at about USD 3.5 billion, but we found no confirmed construction start. Before you quote Saudi projects, ask your broker about certificates of origin and any documents the Saudi client requires; our Saudi Arabia guide covers that market.
Standards and codes for ductwork in Bahrain
We found no Bahraini national standard for sheet metal duct construction. A Bahraini duct shop builds to what the consultant's specification names, inside a framework of building, energy and electrical rules.
- SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards: the usual reference in Gulf specifications for gauges, seams, transverse joints, reinforcement and hangers. See our SMACNA gauge chart and hangers and supports guide.
- ASHRAE: ASHRAE has had a Bahrain chapter since 2006, which installed its 2026-2027 officers in July 2026. Designers use ASHRAE methods for loads, ventilation and duct sizing.
- DW/144: consultants trained in British practice sometimes name the BESA DW/144 specification instead of SMACNA; some Gulf tenders list SMACNA, ASHRAE and DW/144 together. The machines are the same; seam, joint and gauge tables differ. See our DW/144 guide.
- EWA thermal insulation regulation: the Electricity and Water Authority lists a 2018 resolution adopting thermal insulation regulations for buildings and facilities, and runs an approval procedure for thermal insulation materials. Check whether your duct insulation product needs approval; our duct insulation guide covers the options.
- Green Building Code: introduced in December 2021 and applied through the Benayat building permit system. It pushes designers toward tighter duct systems; see our air leakage classes guide and SMACNA seal classes.
- Fire and kitchen extract: smoke extract and kitchen exhaust ductwork follow the project's approved fire strategy, often in heavier gauge or welded steel. See our grease and fire-rated duct guide.
Importing duct machinery into Bahrain
- Customs duty: Bahrain applies the GCC common external tariff of 5% on nearly all imported goods, charged on the CIF value. Goods of GCC origin, and goods covered by agreements such as the one with the United States, are exempt. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but ask your customs broker to confirm the exact tariff line before you budget.
- Industrial licence exemption: the Ministry of Industry and Commerce exempts licensed factories from customs duty on machinery, equipment, parts and raw materials needed for production. For new applications it asks for the request at least four months before import, and the industrial licence is renewed each year. Check eligibility with the ministry before you order.
- VAT: the standard rate has been 10% since 1 January 2022, and the 2025-2026 budget kept it there. VAT applies at import; ask your tax adviser how it is recovered in your case.
- Conformity marks: the Gulf G-Mark applies to listed low voltage electrical products, mainly household appliances, and is not normally required for industrial machines. Confirm with your broker. Taokron machines are CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity and ship with English manuals, electrical diagrams and component lists.
- Shipping in 2026: Khalifa Bin Salman Port at Hidd is the usual container port, but Lloyd's List counted only 15 containership transits of the Strait of Hormuz in September 2026, and major lines were still avoiding it. Ask us about routing through a Saudi port and on by road over the causeway, and allow extra time.
Our importing guide covers the general paperwork.
Power supply: 230/400 V, 50 Hz
Bahrain's supply is listed as 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase at 50 Hz, the IEC 60038 nominal values, and workshop wiring follows EWA's Regulations for Electrical Installations, which were based largely on IEC and IEE wiring practice. Tell us the three phase voltage measured at your workshop and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. Summers are long, hot and humid, so tell us your peak workshop temperature as well and we check cabinet cooling, hydraulic oil cooling and motor ratings. See also duct machine voltage and frequency by country and duct machine power requirements.
Typical Bahraini shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Contractor shop, rectangular duct for housing, schools and fit-outs
Rectangular duct is the bulk of the work for most Bahraini shops, and many HVAC contractors make their own. The core of a practical set is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II or Auto Duct Line SBAL-III, which takes coil through levelling, beading, notching and cutting. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints, a duct zipper to close seams quickly, a pneumatic folder for bends and a pneumatic corner inserting machine for TDF corners. That covers straight duct and simple fittings with a small crew.
Volume shop for stadium, hospital and Eastern Province packages
A shop bidding for Sports City packages, hospitals or work across the causeway needs output and repeatable quality. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape automatic line for high-volume rectangular duct with TDF, angle flange or drive cleat ends. A Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 cuts fittings from nested drawings, a hydraulic folder handles heavier gauges and long bends, and an auto corner making machine keeps up with the line. Our SBAL-V vs SBAL-III comparison helps you choose.
Round and spiral duct
Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and industrial extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Hospital and industrial work
For stainless extract and heavier duct, the stainless duct forming machine and the Automatic Stitchwelder SB-ZF1500 cover the seams that a lock cannot.
Labour and space
Bahrain's private sector depends on expatriate workers: Social Insurance Organisation figures put registered expatriate private sector workers at more than 470,000 at the end of the third quarter of 2025, and construction is one of the largest employers of work permit holders. Permits and housing add cost to each skilled sheet metal worker, so an auto duct line that lets a small crew supply several sites saves more than wages.
Land is scarce on the island. The auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other, so ask us for a layout drawing based on your building before you sign a lease. Leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading, and plan shaded loading and ventilation for summer. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in Bahrain?
We found no Bahraini national standard for sheet metal duct construction. Ductwork is built to the consultant's mechanical specification, which in the Gulf usually names the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards for gauges, seams, joints, reinforcement and hangers, with ASHRAE methods for design. Some consultants trained in British practice name DW/144 instead. Around that sit Bahraini rules: the Electricity and Water Authority's 2018 thermal insulation regulation for buildings, the Green Building Code applied through the Benayat building permit system, and EWA's Regulations for Electrical Installations for your workshop wiring. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Bahrain?
Bahrain's supply is listed as 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase at 50 Hz, the IEC 60038 nominal values. Tell us the three phase voltage measured at your workshop and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. Tell us your peak summer workshop temperature too, so we can check cabinet cooling, hydraulic oil cooling and motor ratings.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Bahrain?
Bahrain applies the GCC common external tariff of 5% on nearly all imported goods, charged on the CIF value, plus VAT at the standard rate of 10%. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but ask your customs broker to confirm the exact tariff line before you budget. Factories holding an industrial licence can apply to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce for exemption from customs duty on production machinery; for new applications the ministry asks for the request at least four months before import. Ask your tax adviser how import VAT is recovered in your case.
Can a Bahrain duct shop supply projects in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province?
Yes, if your paperwork is in order. The King Fahd Causeway is Bahrain's land link to Al Khobar and Dammam, and both countries are in the GCC customs union, but trucks still clear customs at the causeway and Saudi projects may ask for their own documents. A second crossing, the King Hamad Causeway, is planned as a 25 km road and rail link, but we found no confirmed construction start. Ask your broker about certificates of origin and Saudi requirements before you quote Saudi work.
Where is ductwork demand in Bahrain coming from in 2026?
The main sources are government housing in the five model towns (Salman Town, Hidd, Khalifa Town, Sitra and Ramli) under a target of 50,000 new homes; the Bahrain International Sports City at Sakhir, whose first phase includes a stadium of up to 46,000 seats; healthcare projects such as the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Medical City; data centres, including the AWS Middle East (Bahrain) Region and Beyon's Data Oasis campus; and power, water, refinery and road works. The reclaimed island cities announced in 2021 are a longer-term prospect.
Which machines should a new Bahraini duct shop start with?
A contractor shop making rectangular duct for villas, schools and fit-outs usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former, a duct zipper and a folder. Add a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work, and a plasma table when fittings volume grows. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
