HVAC Duct Fabrication in Kenya 2026: Market, Standards and Machines

Most of Kenya's ductwork is made and installed in and around Nairobi, from office blocks in Upper Hill and Westlands to hospitals, data centres and the new national stadium on Ngong Road. This guide is for Kenyan duct shop owners and HVAC contractors deciding whether to add capacity or automate. It covers where the demand is coming from in 2026, the standards Kenyan specifications are written to, the duty, levies, VAT and PVoC rules to settle before you order a machine, the 415 V 50 Hz supply, the machine set-ups that fit, and why a shop in Nairobi can also serve Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Why Kenya in 2026

Kenyan construction is growing again. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics' Economic Survey 2026 reports that construction grew 6.8% in 2025, after contracting 0.7% in 2024. Much of that is housing, which uses little duct, but the recovery also reaches offices, hotels, hospitals, data centres and factories. The work falls into four groups.

Data centres: what is real and what is paused

iXAfrica officially opened NBOX1, a 4.5 MW colocation data centre in Nairobi, in March 2025. It was launched with Schneider Electric and backed by a USD 50 million investment from Helios Investment Partners, and the company has said more facilities are planned.

The project most often quoted is a different story. Microsoft and G42 announced a USD 1 billion geothermal-powered data centre at Olkaria in May 2024, starting with 100 MW and due to operate by May 2026. It did not happen on that plan. In May 2026 President William Ruto said the full campus would need about 1 GW, against Kenya's installed generating capacity of roughly 3 GW, and the government put the project on hold. Treat it as paused, not as a source of orders. White space is often cooled by room or in-row units with little ductwork anyway, but electrical rooms, battery rooms, offices and smoke extract all need sheet metal; our data centre duct manufacturing guide covers the details.

Konza Technopolis

Konza is a 2,000 hectare special economic zone about 64 km south of Nairobi. Built so far: the Konza Complex office block, completed in 2019, which houses the Technopolis offices and the Open University of Kenya; the National Data Centre, whose Tier III phase was completed by 2021; and the first phase of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), complete by 2025, with laboratories and an academic launch planned for 2026. In February 2025 the government told plot holders to start building. Laboratories, lecture halls and data halls all need ventilation, and Konza is close enough for a Nairobi shop to deliver by road.

The national stadium and AFCON 2027

The 60,000 seat Talanta stadium on Ngong Road, to be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium, was reported about 80% complete in January 2026, with opening planned for September 2026. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, and a CAF inspection report in March 2026 said the stadium had not yet met the category required to host. Its 52 executive suites, changing rooms, kitchens and media areas are fit-out and building services work, which is when ductwork goes in.

Offices, malls, hotels and hospitals

The everyday work of most Kenyan duct shops is commercial: office blocks in Upper Hill, Westlands and Kilimani, malls and hotels along the main roads out of the city, and warehouses and factories on Mombasa Road and in Industrial Area. Hospitals add the most demanding jobs. Operating theatres, ICUs, isolation rooms and laboratories need tightly sealed, sometimes stainless ductwork; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.

Nairobi as a base for East Africa

The Port of Mombasa handled about 2.11 million TEU in 2025, up 5.5% on 2024, and Uganda is its main landlocked user. The standard gauge railway runs 472 km from Mombasa to Nairobi, with container freight to an inland container depot at Embakasi since 2018, so machines and coil can be cleared close to a Nairobi workshop.

Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda all apply the same EAC Common External Tariff, so a machine's duty classification is usually the same across the customs union. VAT, levies and standards inspection are national, though; Tanzania, for example, runs its own PVoC programme through its bureau of standards. Check the paperwork with a broker before you price a job across a border.

Standards and codes for ductwork in Kenya

We could not find a Kenyan national standard for sheet metal duct construction. In practice a duct shop builds to what the consulting engineer's specification names, inside a framework of Kenyan building law and product standards.

  • National Building Code 2024: published as Legal Notice No. 47 on 1 March 2024 and in force from 1 March 2025 after a one-year transition, replacing the 1968 building by-laws. It covers structural safety, fire safety and energy efficiency among other things. County governments approve developments, and the National Construction Authority registers contractors and works with the counties on compliance. For a duct shop the fire safety requirements matter most, because they drive fire dampers, smoke control and duct penetrations; see fire and smoke damper integration.
  • DW/144 and SMACNA: Kenyan mechanical specifications usually name an international duct construction standard. British-style specifications cite DW/144, the UK specification for sheet metal ductwork, while US-designed projects and some international clients write to the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards. They differ on gauges, seams and reinforcement, so confirm which governs. Our DW/144 guide and gauge chart compare them.
  • EN duct standards: European-designed projects may cite EN 1505 and EN 1506 for rectangular and circular dimensions and EN 1507 and EN 12237 for strength and air leakage. Whichever document applies, the leakage class decides your seam, joint and sealing method; see our air leakage classes guide.
  • KEBS and Kenya Standards: the Kenya Bureau of Standards publishes Kenya Standards (KS) and runs the PVoC import conformity programme described below. Check whether your client names a KS or international standard for galvanised coil before you order; see our coil specification guide.

Nairobi's highland climate is mild, but Mombasa and the coast are hot and humid all year, so insulation and vapour sealing on supply duct deserve attention there; see our duct insulation guide.

Importing duct machinery into Kenya

  • Customs duty: Kenya applies the EAC Common External Tariff. Since 1 July 2022 it has four bands of 0, 10, 25 and 35 percent, with higher rates for listed sensitive items, and capital goods and raw materials are generally in the 0% band. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but ask your clearing agent to confirm the exact 8-digit line. Iron and steel products are among the goods placed in the 35% band, so have galvanised coil classified separately.
  • Import Declaration Fee (IDF): 2.5% of the customs value.
  • Railway Development Levy (RDL): 2% of the customs value, raised from 1.5% from 27 December 2024.
  • VAT: 16%, the standard rate, charged on imports.
  • PVoC: KEBS runs the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity programme through appointed inspection companies, and a new three-year cycle of contracts started on 19 February 2026. Goods covered by the programme need a certificate of conformity issued before shipment, or they are inspected at the port of entry at extra cost. KEBS lists an exemption for machinery and industrial spares imported by registered manufacturers for their own use, so ask your clearing agent whether your machine and your company qualify. We supply specifications, photos, test records and the Declaration of Conformity for the inspector.

Rates and exemptions change with each Finance Act, so confirm landed cost with your clearing agent. Our importing guide covers the paperwork.

Power supply: 415 V three phase, 50 Hz

Kenya runs at 50 Hz, with 240 V single phase and 415 V three phase supply for industrial premises. Measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us; we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. An auto duct line, a plasma table and a spiral tubeformer running together need a properly sized connection, so have your electrician confirm capacity with Kenya Power before the machines arrive, and plan protection for PLC-controlled lines if supply interruptions are common in your area.

One Kenyan detail: Nairobi sits at around 1,800 m. Standard motor ratings assume installation up to 1,000 m, so tell us your altitude and we check motor, drive and hydraulic cooling margins. See also duct machine voltage and frequency by country.

Typical Kenyan shop set-ups and the machines that fit

Contractor shop, rectangular duct for offices, hotels and fit-outs

Most Nairobi HVAC work is rectangular duct, and many installers make their own in a small workshop. A practical set is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II, which handles 0.5 to 2.0 mm sheet in 1,250 or 1,550 mm widths, or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III with two electrical feeding units and hydraulic notching and shearing. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints and a pneumatic folder for simple fittings. That covers straight duct, TDF joints and most fittings to DW/144 or SMACNA with a small crew.

Volume shop for data centres, hospitals and large projects

Shops chasing data centre, hospital and stadium packages need output and consistent quality over thousands of square metres. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape line from coil to finished panel for TDF, angle flange and drive cleat duct. Pair it with a Duct Zipper SBHF-1.5×1500TDF to close seams automatically, an auto corner making machine and a pneumatic corner inserting machine for TDF corners, a Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 to cut fittings from nested drawings, and a hydraulic folder for heavier gauges and long bends. Hospital work to tight leakage classes rewards this consistency, because machine-formed seams and flanges seal more reliably than hand work.

Round duct

Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and industrial extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.

Labour and space

Kenya's statutory minimum wages are set by government order and vary by town and occupation, and skilled sheet metal workers and machine operators earn well above them. An auto duct line replaces much of the manual marking, cutting, notching and folding, so a small crew can supply several sites and keep quality steady from job to job.

On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Ask us for a layout drawing based on your building before you sign a lease, and leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading. Nairobi traffic is heavy, so a site in Industrial Area or along Mombasa Road, close to both the city and the inland container depot, saves delivery time. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ

Which ductwork standards are used in Kenya?

We could not find a Kenyan national standard for sheet metal duct construction. Kenyan mechanical specifications are written by consulting engineers and name an international document instead: usually DW/144 from the UK's Building Engineering Services Association on British-style specifications, or the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards on US-designed and some international client projects. European-designed jobs may cite EN 1505, EN 1506, EN 1507 and EN 12237. Around that sit the National Building Code 2024, in force since 1 March 2025, for building approval and fire safety, and Kenya Standards published by KEBS for materials and products. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.

What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Kenya?

Kenya runs at 50 Hz, with 240 V single phase and 415 V three phase supply for industrial premises. Tell us the three phase voltage measured at your workshop and your altitude, since Nairobi sits at around 1,800 m, and we wire and size the motors, drives and control transformer to suit.

What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Kenya?

Kenya applies the East African Community Common External Tariff, whose bands since July 2022 are 0, 10, 25 and 35 percent, with capital goods generally in the 0% band. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but confirm the exact 8-digit line with your clearing agent. Imports also pay an Import Declaration Fee of 2.5% and a Railway Development Levy of 2% of customs value, and VAT at 16%.

Does a duct machine need a PVoC certificate of conformity for Kenya?

KEBS runs the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity programme, and a new three-year cycle of inspection contracts started on 19 February 2026. Goods covered by the programme need a certificate of conformity issued before shipment, or they are inspected at the port of entry at extra cost. KEBS lists an exemption for machinery and industrial spares imported by registered manufacturers for their own use. Ask your clearing agent whether your machine and your company qualify before it ships. We supply specifications, photos, test records and the Declaration of Conformity for the inspector.

Where is ductwork demand in Kenya coming from in 2026?

Construction grew 6.8% in 2025 according to the KNBS Economic Survey 2026, after a contraction in 2024. For duct shops the work is in Nairobi offices, malls and hotels, hospital theatres and isolation rooms, data centres such as iXAfrica's NBOX1, the new national stadium on Ngong Road built for AFCON 2027, and Konza Technopolis. The Microsoft and G42 geothermal data centre at Olkaria was put on hold in May 2026, so do not plan around it.

Which machines should a new Kenyan duct shop start with?

A contractor shop making rectangular duct for offices, hotels and fit-outs usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former and a folder. Add a duct zipper, corner machines and a plasma table as volume grows, and a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
