Why Côte d'Ivoire in 2026
Côte d'Ivoire is one of the faster growing economies in Africa. The government is targeting 6.7% growth in 2026, the IMF expects a little less, and the IMF names construction among the drivers alongside agriculture, transport and services. A new national development plan for 2026 to 2030 keeps public investment in infrastructure high. For a duct shop, the work falls into four groups.
Plateau towers and commercial building
The Plateau, Abidjan's business and government district, is where the most visible project is rising: the Tour F, the sixth tower of the government's Cité Administrative. It is designed at about 421 m with roughly 140,000 m² of gross floor area, was started in July 2021 by developer PFO Africa with BESIX on structural works, and is targeted for completion in 2026. A tower that size needs a great deal of supply, return, stair pressurisation and smoke extract duct, much of it rectangular.
Private commercial work continues around it. In May 2025 the developer Duval and the national social security fund CNPS signed agreements worth about CFA 100 billion for two projects: Village Notre Père in the Plateau, with more than 21,000 m² of shops, a shopping gallery and a hotel residence due to open in 2027, and the Riviera Park shopping and leisure centre in Cocody. Malls, hotels and offices like these are the everyday work of most Abidjan duct shops.
Hospitals
The largest health project is the CHU d'Abobo, a 600-bed university hospital on an 18 hectare site in the north of Abidjan. On 9 September 2026 the health minister reported structural work 90% complete and overall physical progress at 42%, with delivery still targeted for the end of December 2026. With the structure nearly finished, most of what remains is fit-out and building services, which is when ductwork goes in. Private healthcare is growing too: the IFC is preparing a guarantee for the Farah group to build a 60-bed oncology centre in Adjamé. Operating theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories need tightly sealed duct; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.
Abidjan Metro Line 1
Line 1 runs about 37 km north to south from Anyama through Abobo, Adjamé, the Plateau, Treichville and Marcory to Port-Bouët near the airport, with 18 stations in most published descriptions. On 8 October 2026 the metro company SICMA announced completion of the rail viaduct across the lagoon between the Plateau and Treichville. Full commissioning is now projected for late 2028 to 2029, so treat the stations, depot and operations buildings as work for the next few years rather than for this one.
Data centres and industry
Raxio opened a Tier III colocation data centre, CIV1, at the VITIB technology zone in Grand-Bassam in September 2024, with 3 MW of IT power and room to expand. White space often uses room or in-row cooling with little duct, but electrical rooms, offices and smoke extract still need sheet metal; our data centre duct guide covers this. Port-related warehouses, food processing and agro-industry around Abidjan add steady extract and ventilation work.
Abidjan as a base for francophone West Africa
The Port of Abidjan handled 46.6 million tonnes in 2025, up 16% on 2024, and transit traffic to inland countries rose 34% to about 3.9 million tonnes. Burkina Faso accounted for about 2.4 million tonnes and Mali for about 1.47 million tonnes. Machines and coil that land in Abidjan can be moved inland by road, and since April 2026 a multimodal service links Abidjan to Bamako via rail to Bobo-Dioulasso.
For a duct shop the attraction is that specifications in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea are usually written in French and often draw on the same French documents as in Abidjan. Each country has its own customs and tax rules, and Burkina Faso and Mali left ECOWAS in January 2025, so check the paperwork with a broker before you price a job across a border. Senegal has its own port at Dakar and Guinea at Conakry, so compare freight before assuming Abidjan is cheaper.
Standards and codes for ductwork in Côte d'Ivoire
There is no Ivorian duct construction code. In practice a duct shop builds to what the CCTP (the technical specification) names, and in Côte d'Ivoire that means French practice.
- Ivorian standards (NI): CODINORM, the national standards body set up in 1992, publishes Normes Ivoiriennes, which are generally derived from French standards. Some regulated products need the NI mark or a certificate from an accredited body.
- French DTU and AFNOR standards: Ivorian HVAC tender documents cite them directly. The 2025 CCTP for the climatisation and ventilation lot of a BCEAO building in Daloa, for example, requires work to the DTU prescriptions, AFNOR standards and NF C 15-100 for the electrical installation, with cooling loads calculated by the Carrier method. Our France duct fabrication guide explains how these documents are used.
- NF EN duct standards: when a specification goes into duct construction details, the European references are EN 1505 and EN 1506 for rectangular and circular dimensions and EN 1507 and EN 12237 for strength and air leakage, published in France as NF EN. Check which the CCTP names. The leakage class decides your seam, joint and sealing method; see our air leakage classes guide.
- Ivorian fire safety texts: the same CCTP lists Ivorian fire regulations for buildings open to the public and the 1974 order on fire safety in high-rise buildings (immeubles de grande hauteur), which matters for Plateau towers. These drive fire dampers, smoke extract and duct penetrations; see fire and smoke damper integration.
- SMACNA: some international clients and US-designed projects write to SMACNA. If a job switches between SMACNA gauges and EN tables, confirm which governs before you cut metal. Our gauge chart compares the two.
Abidjan's coastal climate is hot and humid all year, so insulation and vapour sealing on supply duct deserve attention; see our duct insulation guide.
Importing duct machinery into Côte d'Ivoire
- Customs duty: Côte d'Ivoire applies the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, with five bands of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 35 percent. Capital goods are generally in the 5% band. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, but the rate depends on the full 10-digit line, so ask your transitaire to classify the machine and confirm it.
- Levies: a statistical duty of 1% of CIF value, a community solidarity levy of 0.8%, a community levy of 0.5% and an African Union levy of 0.2%.
- TVA: 18%, charged on the CIF value plus duties and taxes.
- Inspection: goods worth more than 1,000,000 CFA francs FOB are inspected before shipment to verify the invoice, and some product groups need a certificate of conformity before clearance. Your importer will know whether this applies to your machine.
- EU partnership agreement: since January 2019 EU-origin products on the covered tariff lines enter free of customs duty, but the levies, statistical duty and TVA are still due. Compare a European quotation with a Taokron one on landed cost.
- Investment code: projects approved under the investment code (Ordinance 2018-646, amended in 2019 and 2024) through CEPICI, the investment promotion centre, can receive customs duty exemptions or reductions on equipment. Thresholds and conditions apply, so confirm with an adviser before you order.
Containers land at Abidjan; San-Pédro is the country's second port. Our importing guide covers the general paperwork.
Power supply: 220/380 V, 50 Hz
Côte d'Ivoire runs at 50 Hz, with low voltage supply of 220 V single phase and 380 V three phase. Measure the three phase voltage at your workshop and tell us; we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. An auto duct line, a plasma table and a spiral tubeformer running together need a properly sized connection, so have your electrician check capacity with the utility before the machines arrive. If supply interruptions are common in your area, plan protection for PLC-controlled lines. See also duct machine voltage and frequency by country.
Typical Ivorian shop set-ups and the machines that fit
Contractor shop, rectangular duct for offices, hotels and fit-outs
Most Abidjan HVAC work is rectangular duct, and many installers make their own in a small workshop. A practical set is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II, which handles 0.5 to 2.0 mm sheet in 1,250 or 1,550 mm widths, or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III with two electrical feeding units and hydraulic notching and shearing. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints and a pneumatic folder for simple fittings. That covers straight duct, TDF joints and most fittings with a small crew.
Volume shop for towers, hospitals and the metro
Shops chasing tower, hospital and transit packages need output and consistent quality over thousands of square metres. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape line from coil to finished panel for TDF, angle flange and drive cleat duct. Pair it with a Duct Zipper SBHF-1.5×1500TDF to close seams automatically, an auto corner making machine and a pneumatic corner inserting machine for TDF corners, a Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 to cut fittings from nested drawings, and a hydraulic folder for heavier gauges and long bends. Hospital work to tight leakage classes rewards this consistency, because machine-formed seams and flanges seal more reliably than hand work.
Round duct
Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and industrial extract. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.
Labour and space
Côte d'Ivoire's minimum wage (SMIG) has been CFA 75,000 a month since 1 January 2023, when it rose by 25%. Skilled sheet metal workers and machine operators earn more, and good ones are in demand when large projects are running. An auto duct line replaces much of the manual marking, cutting, notching and folding, so a small crew can supply several sites and keep quality steady.
On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Ask us for a layout drawing based on your building before you sign a lease, and leave room for coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading. Abidjan traffic is heavy, so a site with easy access to the Plateau, Cocody and the northern districts saves delivery time. Our factory layout guide has worked examples.

FAQ
Which ductwork standards are used in Côte d'Ivoire?
There is no separate Ivorian duct construction code. CODINORM publishes Ivorian standards (NI), which are generally derived from French standards, and HVAC specifications are written in French in the French style. A typical CCTP for climatisation and ventilation cites the French DTU documents, AFNOR standards, NF C 15-100 for electrical work and Ivorian fire safety texts, including the 1974 order on high-rise buildings. Where a specification names European duct standards, these are EN 1505 and EN 1506 for dimensions and EN 1507 and EN 12237 for strength and air leakage, usually in their NF EN editions. Some international clients write to SMACNA instead. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.
What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Côte d'Ivoire?
Côte d'Ivoire runs at 50 Hz, with low voltage supply of 220 V single phase and 380 V three phase. Tell us the three phase voltage measured at your workshop when you ask for a quotation, and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit.
What taxes apply when importing duct machinery into Côte d'Ivoire?
Côte d'Ivoire applies the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, which has five bands: 0, 5, 10, 20 and 35 percent. Capital goods are generally in the 5% band, but the rate depends on the exact 10-digit tariff line, so ask your transitaire to confirm it. Imports also pay a 1% statistical duty, a 0.8% community solidarity levy, a 0.5% community levy and a 0.2% African Union levy, and TVA at 18% is charged on the CIF value plus duties and taxes. Goods worth more than 1,000,000 CFA francs FOB are subject to pre-shipment inspection.
Do European-built machines enter Côte d'Ivoire duty-free?
Under the economic partnership agreement between Côte d'Ivoire and the EU, tariff dismantling has applied since January 2019, and EU-origin products on the covered tariff lines enter free of customs duty. The levies, the statistical duty and TVA are still due. Machines of other origin pay the normal rate for their line unless an incentive applies, such as approval under the investment code through CEPICI. Compare quotations on landed cost, not ex-works price.
Can a duct shop in Abidjan supply Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Guinea?
Abidjan is already a major sea gateway for Burkina Faso and Mali, which have no coastline: the Port of Abidjan reported 2.4 million tonnes of Burkina Faso traffic and about 1.47 million tonnes of Mali traffic in 2025. Specifications in all four countries are usually written in French, the working language of administration in all four, and often draw on French practice, so one shop can work to familiar documents. Each country has its own customs and tax rules, and Burkina Faso and Mali left ECOWAS in January 2025, so check with a broker before you quote a job across a border.
Which machines should a new Ivorian duct shop start with?
A contractor shop making rectangular duct for offices, hotels and fit-outs usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former and a folder. Add a duct zipper, corner machines and a plasma table as volume grows, and a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges and monthly output and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
