HVAC Duct Fabrication in Nigeria 2026: Market, Standards and Machines

Nigeria's ductwork market sits mainly in three cities: Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. This guide is for duct shop owners and HVAC contractors there who are deciding whether to add capacity or move from hand work to machines. It covers where the ductwork demand is coming from in 2026, which standards Nigerian specifications actually name, the import duties, VAT and SONCAP steps to settle before you order a machine, the 415 V 50 Hz supply and the generator reality behind it, and the machine set-ups that fit typical Nigerian shops.

Why Nigeria in 2026

Nigerian HVAC contractors are busy with data centres in Lagos, industry around the Lekki Free Trade Zone, hospitals, towers and public buildings in Lagos and Abuja, and oil and gas work around Port Harcourt. Most of it needs rectangular galvanised duct, often more than a hand shop can turn out on time.

Data centres in Lagos

In May 2026 Kasi Cloud commissioned LOS1, the first phase of a campus at Maiyegun in Lekki planned for 100 MW of critical IT load. Rack Centre has commissioned LGS2 in Ikeja, a 12 MW building with six data halls. Equinix announced a US$22 million facility, LG3, in the Lekki corridor in November 2025, and Open Access Data Centres has announced a 24 MW facility in two phases. The Lagos State government said in May 2026 that about 146 MW of extra capacity is in the pipeline and that it wants more than 250 MW by 2030.

White space is often cooled by room or in-row units with little ductwork, but electrical rooms, battery rooms, generator halls, offices and smoke extract all need sheet metal. Our data centre duct manufacturing guide covers the details.

Lekki Free Trade Zone and industry

The Lekki Free Trade Zone covers about 16,500 hectares in south-east Lagos next to the Lekki Deep Sea Port. The Dangote Industries Free Zone inside it hosts the Dangote refinery, listed by the free zone authority at 650,000 barrels per day, and a urea fertiliser complex of 3 million tonnes a year. Process plants, warehouses, control rooms and offices around the port bring steady ventilation, extract and air conditioning work, some of it heavier gauge or stainless.

Hospitals

In early 2026 the Lagos health commissioner said the 150-bed New Massey Children's Hospital on Lagos Island, the 280-bed General Hospital in Ojo and a psychiatric hospital at Ketu-Ejirin were about 70% complete and targeted for opening in April 2026; we could not confirm that the dates held. In Ikoyi, the 140-bed Lagos Medipark, a public-private partnership, broke ground in December 2024 and is under construction. Operating theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories need tightly sealed duct, sometimes stainless; see our cleanroom duct guide and galvanised vs stainless comparison.

Towers in Lagos, public buildings in Abuja, oil and gas in Port Harcourt

  • Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Ikoyi: offices, banks, hotels and malls are the everyday work of most Lagos duct shops. After the September 2025 fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, where the state government confirmed seven deaths from smoke inhalation, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission said the smoke spread quickly through the air-conditioning ducts. Expect more attention to fire dampers and smoke extract in refurbishments and new towers; see fire and smoke damper integration.
  • Abuja: federal and FCT government buildings, such as the new Court of Appeal complex at Dakibiyu, plus offices and hotels.
  • Port Harcourt and Bonny: oil and gas is the anchor. Nigeria LNG's Train 7 on Bonny Island has been reported more than 90% complete, with start-up targeted for the end of 2027. Control buildings and accommodation on such sites need pressurised ventilation, often to an international client's specification.

Standards and codes for ductwork in Nigeria

Nigeria has no national duct construction standard. A duct shop builds to whatever the consultant's specification names, usually British or American documents.

  • DW 144 and British Standards: many Nigerian specifications are written in the British style. For example, the 2019 HVAC refurbishment specification for the Deputy High Commission of Canada in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, requires ductwork fabricated, leakage tested and supported to DW 144, with BS EN standards and CIBSE commissioning codes. Our DW 144 fabrication guide explains what that means in the shop.
  • SMACNA and ASHRAE: US-designed projects, oil and gas operators and some international data centre clients write to the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards for gauges, seams, joints and reinforcement, with ASHRAE standards for design. If a job mixes SMACNA gauges with DW 144 tables, confirm which governs before you cut metal. See our gauge chart and SMACNA seal classes.
  • National Building Code: the code dates from 2006 but has not been passed by the National Assembly, and only Lagos and a few other states have domesticated it. A federal advisory committee was inaugurated in August 2025. State building control and fire rules are what inspectors actually enforce.
  • Building Energy Efficiency Code: published in 2017 for residential and office buildings, it targets equipment efficiency and the building envelope more than duct details. Lagos is hot and humid all year, so insulation and vapour sealing on supply duct matter; see our duct insulation guide.

Whichever document governs, the leakage class decides your seam, joint and sealing method; our air leakage classes guide compares the British, European and SMACNA classes.

Importing duct machinery into Nigeria

  • Customs duty: Nigeria applies the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, which has five bands of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 35 percent. Duty is charged on the CIF value converted at the official exchange rate. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, and capital equipment is generally in the lower bands, but the rate depends on the full 10-digit line, so ask your licensed customs agent to classify the machine and confirm it before you budget.
  • Levies: importers commonly pay the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme levy of 0.5% of CIF, a 7% surcharge on the duty amount and the 1% Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme charge on FOB value. A unified 4% FOB charge meant to replace the CISS and the 7% surcharge was suspended by the Ministry of Finance in September 2025. Check with your agent which charges apply on the day you clear.
  • VAT: 7.5%, charged on the CIF value plus duty and levies. The rate was kept at 7.5% under the Nigeria Tax Act, in force since 1 January 2026, and the new law widens input VAT recovery to fixed assets used for taxable supplies, which can help a VAT-registered duct shop. Confirm with your tax adviser.
  • SONCAP: machinery is a regulated product under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme. Each shipment needs a SONCAP Product Certificate and a Shipment Certificate from a SON-accredited inspection firm before it leaves the port of loading. Since 27 March 2026 SONCAP applications are handled on the National Single Window, where certificates must be activated for Form M (opened through your bank), the Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR) and clearance. The list of accredited firms changed during 2026, so ask your agent which one to use; we supply the technical documents the inspector needs.

Power supply: 415 V 50 Hz, and the generator behind it

Nigeria's low voltage supply is three phase four wire at 415 V between phases and about 230 to 240 V phase to neutral, at 50 Hz. Tell us the voltage measured at your workshop and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit.

The bigger question is the grid. The national grid collapsed on 29 December 2025 and twice more in January 2026, and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria reported that its members spent ₦1.34 trillion on alternative power in 2025, up 21% on 2024. Most duct shops therefore run part of the day on a diesel or gas generator, and the machines must be planned around it:

  • Size the generator for starting, not running: hydraulic pumps and the main motor of a spiral tubeformer draw several times their running current at start. Send us your generator rating and we plan the start sequence so a line does not trip the set.
  • Protect the controls: an automatic voltage regulator and a small UPS for the PLC circuit stop a changeover between grid and generator from crashing a programme mid-coil.
  • Count fuel per square metre: when power comes from diesel, a line that makes a duct in one pass instead of four manual steps also saves fuel. See duct machine power requirements and voltage and frequency by country.

Typical Nigerian shop set-ups and the machines that fit

Contractor shop, rectangular duct for offices, banks and fit-outs

Many Nigerian installers make their own rectangular duct in a small workshop. A practical start is a Rectangular Duct Line II SBAL-II, which handles 0.5 to 2.0 mm sheet in 1,250 or 1,550 mm widths, or an Auto Duct Line SBAL-III with two electrical feeding units and hydraulic notching and shearing. Add a Pittsburgh lockformer (SBLC series) for longitudinal seams, a TDF flange forming machine for transverse joints and a pneumatic folder for simple fittings. That covers straight duct, TDF joints and most fittings with a small crew, and it replaces the slowest hand steps: marking, cutting, notching and folding.

Volume shop for data centres, towers and hospitals

Shops chasing data centre, tower and hospital packages need output and consistent quality over thousands of square metres. The Auto Duct Line SBAL-V is a U-shape line from coil to finished panel for TDF, angle flange and drive cleat duct. Pair it with a Duct Zipper SBHF-1.5×1500TDF to close seams automatically, an auto corner making machine and a pneumatic corner inserting machine for TDF corners, a Plasma Cutter SBPC1550 to cut fittings from nested drawings, and a hydraulic folder for heavier gauges and long bends. Work to DW 144 or SMACNA leakage classes rewards this consistency, because machine-formed seams and flanges seal more reliably than hand work.

Round duct

Spiral duct suits exposed ceilings, car parks, warehouses and industrial extract around Lekki and Port Harcourt. The Spiral Tubeformer SBTF-1500 or SBTF-1602 forms round duct, and the Spiral Duct Flanging Machine SBFB-1600 turns flanges on round duct ends. For a real example, see Kavanagh Industries in Sydney, which added an SBTF-1602 in October 2026.

Labour and space

Nigeria's national minimum wage has been ₦70,000 a month since July 2024. In October 2026 the Labour Minister said the next statutory review is due in June 2027. Skilled sheet metal workers earn well above the minimum and are in demand when big projects run, so an auto duct line that lets a small crew supply several sites keeps output and quality steady.

On space, the auto duct line is the longest item, with coil racks at one end and a run-out table at the other. Leave room for the generator house and fuel, coil deliveries, finished duct storage and truck loading. Lagos traffic is heavy, so a site near Victoria Island, Ikoyi and the Lekki corridor saves delivery time. FAQ

Which ductwork standards are used in Nigeria?

Nigeria has no national duct construction standard, so a duct shop builds to whatever the project specification names. Many Nigerian specifications are written in the British style and call for ductwork to DW 144, with British and European standards and CIBSE commissioning codes; the 2019 HVAC specification for the Deputy High Commission of Canada in Lagos is one example. US-designed projects, oil and gas operators and some international clients write to the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards and ASHRAE instead. The National Building Code of 2006 has not been passed into law by the National Assembly and has been domesticated by only a few states, including Lagos, and the 2017 Building Energy Efficiency Code covers residential and office buildings. Always build to the documents named in the project specification.

What voltage and frequency do duct machines need in Nigeria?

Nigeria's low voltage supply is three phase four wire at 415 V between phases and about 230 to 240 V phase to neutral, at 50 Hz. Tell us the voltage measured at your workshop and we wire the motors, drives and control transformer to suit. Because most shops also run on a diesel or gas generator, send us the generator rating too, so we can plan motor start sequences and recommend voltage regulation and a UPS for the PLC controls.

What taxes and levies apply when importing duct machinery into Nigeria?

Nigeria applies the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, which has five bands of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 35 percent, charged on the CIF value. Duct forming and folding machines usually fall under HS heading 8462, and capital equipment is generally in the lower bands, but the rate depends on the full 10-digit line, so ask your licensed customs agent to confirm it. Importers commonly also pay the 0.5% ETLS levy on CIF, a 7% surcharge on the duty and the 1% CISS charge on FOB value; a unified 4% FOB charge meant to replace the last two was suspended in September 2025. VAT is 7.5%, kept at that rate under the Nigeria Tax Act from 1 January 2026.

Do imported duct machines need a SONCAP certificate?

Yes. Machinery is a regulated product under SONCAP, the conformity assessment programme of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, so each shipment needs a SONCAP Product Certificate and a Shipment Certificate issued through a SON-accredited inspection firm before it leaves the port of loading. Since 27 March 2026 SONCAP and import permit applications are handled on the National Single Window, where the certificates must be activated for Form M, the PAAR and cargo clearance. The list of accredited firms changed during 2026, so ask your customs agent which one to use. Taokron supplies the technical documents the inspector needs.

Where is ductwork demand in Nigeria coming from in 2026?

The main sources are data centres in Lagos, such as Kasi Cloud's Lekki campus, Rack Centre's LGS2 in Ikeja and the announced Equinix LG3 and Open Access Data Centres facilities; industry around the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote refinery; hospitals, including the Lagos State programme and the Lagos Medipark in Ikoyi; offices, banks and hotels in Lagos and government buildings in Abuja; and oil and gas work around Port Harcourt, such as Nigeria LNG's Train 7 on Bonny Island.

Which machines should a new Nigerian duct shop start with?

A contractor shop making rectangular duct for offices, banks and fit-outs usually starts with a rectangular duct line or auto duct line, a Pittsburgh lockformer, a TDF flange former and a folder. Volume shops add an SBAL-V auto duct line, a duct zipper, corner machines and a plasma table. Add a spiral tubeformer when round duct becomes regular work. Send your duct sizes, gauges, monthly output and generator rating and a Taokron engineer will propose a machine set within 12 hours.
