First, two classes of folder — and which one a duct shop is really buying
RAS Reinhardt Maschinenbau (Sindelfingen, Germany, independent and family-owned) builds precision folders for panels, cassettes and boxes: the XLTbend is a semi-automated up-down bending centre for parts up to 3,200 mm long and 3 mm thick with 250 mm box height, a patented Beam-in-Beam folding beam for straight bends, Bendex software that programs the bend sequence automatically, front and rear operation and laser loading assistance. RAS also sells HVAC-specific machines through RAS Systems in the US. That is class one: CNC precision folders, bought by fabricators who make architectural panels, enclosures and cassettes and who need repeatable complex bends in small batches.
Class two is the duct-shop folder: a hydraulic or pneumatic folding machine, or a TDF bending machine, that folds rectangular duct blanks, closes TDF flange corners and forms duct seams on galvanised 0.4–2.0 mm sheet, all day, with an operator rather than a program. Most duct shops asking about RAS alternatives need class two, sometimes with one class-one machine for fittings and plenum work. Decide which class you are buying before you compare brands; comparing an XLTbend with a pneumatic duct folder on price alone misleads both ways.
Why buyers look for an alternative (none of which is a knock on RAS)
- Capability you will not use. Automatic bend sequencing and 3 mm capacity are for cassettes and enclosures; a shop folding 0.7 mm duct blanks pays for automation the work never needs.
- Premium German pricing and lead time. Precision folders are built to order at premium prices; a duct shop equipping several bays often needs two or three simpler folders for the price of one.
- Regional service. RAS sells through dealers in Europe and RAS Systems in North America; elsewhere, ask who commissions and who stocks blades and clamping tools.
- Buying the folder with the line. A shop buying a coil line, TDF former and folders together often wants one vendor and one commissioning team.
- TDF work specifically. Closing TDF flange corners wants a TDF bending machine sized to the flange, not a general folder.

The German head-to-head: Schechtl
Schechtl is the other German name duct and roofing shops know. Its motorised swivel folders publish clear capacities: the MAX 250 folds 2,540 mm at 2.0 mm steel, the MAX 310 3,100 mm at 1.5 mm and the MAX 400 4,000 mm at 1.0 mm, with a range of controls, backgauges and rails, and CNC versions sold in North America for roofing, HVAC and light fabrication. Best for: shops that want German build quality in a straightforward swivel folder rather than a bending centre. Weigh: still premium pricing, and the same regional-service question outside Europe and North America.
US heritage: Roper Whitney and Roto-Die
Roper Whitney (Rockford, Illinois, part of the TennSmith family) sells USA-made AutoBrake, AutoMax long folders and EVOBEND up-down folders alongside hand brakes and HVAC rotary machines, with published list prices on some HVAC items; its Synergy and Konstruct software cover programming. Roto-Die sells hydraulic bending brakes through the Mestek Machinery dealer network, which makes it the natural folder for a shop already buying Lockformer or Iowa Precision. Best for: North American shops that want domestic build and dealer service. Weigh: dealer maps are domestic; check published lengths and gauges per model, which vary widely across these ranges.
The Swedish group: CIDAN
CIDAN Machinery Group builds its FORMA and Futura folders in Götene, Sweden, with Forstner coil-handling machines made in Austria and Thalmann folders in the same group; it markets the FORMA as a cross-over from batch production to one-piece work and runs a used-machinery arm that resells RAS and Roper Whitney too. Best for: European shops wanting a Scandinavian precision folder with coil handling from one group. Weigh: premium tier; confirm HVAC-specific tooling and service in your country.
The duct-shop class — and where Taokron fits
At the lowest acquisition cost, export makers sell pneumatic and hydraulic duct folders in 1.5 to 2.5 m lengths. Beam straightness, clamping force, blade hardness and the accuracy of the angle stop vary a great deal; a folder that is 0.5 mm out over 2 m makes duct that will not seam.

Choosing without regret: the folder checklist
- Class first. List the parts you fold in a week. If they are duct blanks, seams and TDF corners, buy duct-shop folders; if they are cassettes, plenums and enclosures with many bends, budget one CNC folder.
- Length and gauge with margin. Match working length to your longest duct blank (1,250 or 1,550 mm coil gives 1,300–1,600 mm blanks; long plenums need 2,000–2,500 mm) and rate the folder for your heaviest gauge, not your usual one.
- Straightness and clamping. Ask for the deflection figure over the full length at rated gauge, and fold a sample of your own sheet.
- Angle repeatability. Check the angle stop or CNC repeatability on ten consecutive 90° folds.
- TDF corners. Confirm the TDF bending machine matches your flange height (35 mm on the Taokron SBTDF) and gauge.
- Air and power. Pneumatic folders need clean air at the stated pressure; hydraulic and CNC folders need the right three-phase supply.
- Blades, tooling and days. Stocked blades and clamping tools with quoted delivery; commissioning and training days in the contract.
