Spiro Tubeformer Alternatives — A 2026 Buyer's Comparison

Spiro International built the first Tubeformer in 1956 and still sets the reference for spiral duct machines: its own site says most of the world’s round duct is made on Spiro equipment. So if you are shopping for an alternative, do it with clear eyes. Some “alternatives” are the same company, the switching cost lives in forming heads and strip width rather than in operator skill, and the machine class you need depends on the largest diameter and heaviest gauge you actually sell. This guide maps the real options by tier and walks the switching mechanics. It is written by people who build spiral machines, so weigh the Taokron section against the framework.

First, what counts as an alternative — and what doesn’t

Spiro International SA (Bösingen, Switzerland) has been part of the Swedish Lindab group since 1992. Its North American operation, Spiral-Helix Inc. in Bensenville, Illinois, started life in 1974 as Spiro America and builds Tubeformers and the Flying Slitter locally for the Americas. Cross-shopping Spiro against Spiral-Helix is therefore shopping the same product from the same owner. Since 2023 Lindab has also bought Firmac (UK, rectangular duct lines) and Vicon (US, rectangular and coil lines), so the whole Lindab machinery division now sits under one roof. That is worth knowing if you are comparing “Spiro for round, Vicon for rectangular”: it is one vendor.

Genuine alternatives are the spiral machines made by someone else: Lockformer (Mestek Machinery, USA), Tormec (Spain, with a Swiss office), the export-tier makers of 1602-pattern machines, and Taokron.

Why buyers look for an alternative (none of which is a knock on Spiro)

These are the procurement reasons that come up, not deficiencies. Spiro’s reputation is earned.

  • Premium Swiss positioning. Spiro sells on reliability and its installed base, and prices accordingly. A shop buying its first spiral machine, or a second unit for overflow work, often cannot justify benchmark pricing for a machine that will run part of a shift.
  • Lead time. Spiral tubeformers are built to order. When a project needs round duct next quarter, the available build slot decides more than the brochure does.
  • Landed cost and parts round-trips outside Europe and North America. Spiro publishes a subsidiary in North America and a partner network elsewhere, but the partner list is not public. A buyer in Australia, the Gulf, South-East Asia or Africa reasonably asks where the nearest forming head, slitter blade or service engineer actually sits.
  • Wanting 1602-class capability without the 1602 price. The Ø80–1600 mm, 0.4–1.3 mm galvanised envelope is the industry’s standard round-duct machine class. Several makers now build to that envelope, so buyers shop the envelope, not the badge.
  • Heavy gauge and large diameter. Mining ventilation, industrial exhaust and jacketing push past 1.3 mm and 1,600 mm. Spiro’s Tubeformer 2020 covers Ø80–2500 mm and up to 2.0 mm galvanised; a buyer in that segment compares it with the 2020-class machines from other makers.

The benchmark: what Spiro actually publishes

Because most alternatives are measured against it, it helps to write down what Spiro states for its own machines. The Tubeformer 1602/3600 Modular Edition, which Spiro calls the world’s most-sold Tubeformer, covers Ø80–1600 mm and comes in three builds: standard (galvanised and aluminium 0.4–1.3 mm, stainless 0.4–0.6 mm), PRO (stainless to 0.8 mm) and Heavy Gauge (galvanised and aluminium to 1.7 mm, stainless to 1.0 mm). Spiro guarantees output for 3 m ducts: 180 ducts an hour at Ø100/0.5 mm, 53 at Ø500/0.7 mm and 23 at Ø1250/0.9 mm on the standard build. The Tubeformer 2020/3600H covers Ø80–2500 mm and 0.4–2.0 mm galvanised, aimed at mining ventilation, voidforming and jacketing. Around the tubeformer sit the Gorelocker Combi-T (Ø125–1250 mm elbows), the Fittingshaper 1250, plasma and curve cutters, stitch welders and the Spiro Care service contract.

Two things to take from that list. First, the guaranteed-output figures are the honest yardstick to ask every vendor for, at your diameters and gauges, and to write into the acceptance test. Second, the fittings ecosystem is part of the decision: a round-duct shop buys a system, not a tubeformer.

The US head-to-head: Lockformer spiral (Mestek Machinery)

Lockformer sells two spiral tubeformers, the 1.2E (3–64 in, 28–18 ga) and the 2.0 (3–100 in, 28–16 ga), and pitches them on small footprint and on being the most affordable in their class. Lockformer is a Mestek Machinery brand alongside Iowa Precision, Engel and Roto-Die, with an authorised dealer network across the United States and Canada and a large domestic service organisation. Best for: North American shops that want a US-built spiral machine with dealer service nearby. Weigh: the published dealer network is domestic; outside North America you are buying through export channels, and the fittings and cutting side is spread across the Mestek brands rather than one round-duct catalogue.

The European mid tier: Tormec

Tormec designs and builds its machines in Barcelona and keeps an office in Dietikon, Switzerland; it describes itself as present in more than 60 countries with its own service, spare-parts stock, retrofits and refurbished machines. Its Tube-Former covers Ø80–1600 mm and 0.4–1.2 mm galvanised on 137/140 mm strip with an 11 kW drive; the die-based Tubo Nova covers Ø125–1400 mm to 1.0 mm. Around them sit the ARC-DUAL flanger and seam closer, SEGTO segment cutter and an elbow maker. Best for: European buyers who want a European-built machine in the standard 1602 envelope with a fittings line from the same maker. Weigh: Tormec publishes no throughput figures, so ask for guaranteed ducts per hour in writing, and note that its old tormec.com domain has lapsed; the live site is tormec.de.

The value tier — and where Taokron fits

At the lowest acquisition cost, a tier of export makers offers 1602-pattern spiral machines, often described in listings as “Spiro-type”. This is where Taokron sits, and this is our own machinery, so read it as a vendor’s case. Switching without stranding your round duct

Spiral duct made on different machines fits together, because the spiral lock seam and the diameter series are industry standards, not a Spiro geometry. What does not transfer is the tooling. Work through these before you sign:

  • Count the forming heads you own and the diameters you sell. Forming heads (or dies, on die-based machines) are diameter-specific and brand-specific. List every diameter you produced in the last year, and price the head set for the new machine against that list, not against the brochure’s full range.
  • Match strip width to your slitting. 1602-class machines run 137 mm strip for 0.4–1.0 mm and 140 mm for 1.1–1.3 mm; 2020-class machines add 150 mm for 1.4–2.0 mm. If you slit your own coil, confirm the widths; if you buy slit coil, confirm your supplier stocks them.
  • Match gauge and material, with margin. Stainless is the range that varies most between builds (0.6, 0.8, 1.0 or 1.2 mm caps). Confirm the heaviest stainless and aluminium you actually run.
  • Decide the cutting system. Flying slitter, plasma and saw-blade cutting give different cut quality, dust and noise, and different consumables. Heavy gauge needs plasma or a heavy slitter; a part-time machine can live with a saw.
  • Check tube length and the run-out. Standard run-out tables suit 3 m ducts; long tubes for jacketing or voidforming need a longer run-out and floor space you must have.
  • Check electrical fit. Confirm voltage, phase and frequency (50 Hz versus 60 Hz drives, Australian 415 V three-phase) and cooling-water needs for the slitter.
  • Price the fittings side as a system. Elbows, reducers, saddles and flanging need their own machines; confirm the new vendor covers them or that your existing fittings machines stay.
  • Pin down spare-head and slitter-blade lead time. Ask for stocked wear parts and the quoted delivery time to your door, in writing.
  • Run an acceptance test on your own coil. Produce your top three diameters at your heaviest gauge, measure roundness and seam tightness, and test-fit to duct you already have before the old machine leaves.

The headline: operator retraining on a spiral machine is measured in days, but forming heads, strip widths and the fittings line are where the real switching cost sits. Frame the decision around those three.

No. Spiral-Helix Inc. in Bensenville, Illinois, is Spiro International’s own North American company, founded in 1974 as Spiro America. Both belong to the Lindab group. It builds Tubeformers for the Americas; it is the same product from the same owner.

Will spiral duct from another brand of machine fit my existing Spiro-made duct?

Yes. The spiral lock seam and the diameter series are industry standards. Match the diameter, the gauge and the seam type (outside lock is the norm) and the duct connects with slip couplings exactly as before. Test-fit a sample before you retire the old machine.

Do Spiro forming heads fit another maker’s tubeformer?
