Iowa Precision Alternatives — A 2026 Buyer's Comparison

Iowa Precision has sold more than a thousand coil-line systems since the first Fabriduct, and inside Mestek Machinery it is the premium rectangular-duct automation brand. If you are shopping for an alternative, start by separating the brands that are the same company from the ones that are not, then compare the things a coil line is really bought on: coil capacity, gauge, the flange former, plasma integration and the software it imports. Pittsburgh seams and TDF flanges are standards, so duct from a different line still fits. This guide maps the alternatives by tier and walks the mechanics. It is written by people who build duct lines, so weigh the Taokron section against the framework.

First, what counts as an alternative — and what doesn’t

Iowa Precision began in 1950 as Welty Heating, moved to Cedar Rapids in 1956, took its current name in 1978 and came into Mestek, Inc. with the Met-Coil purchase in 2000. Its old iowaprecision.com address no longer resolves; everything now lives on mestekmachinery.com beside Lockformer, Engel and Roto-Die, all built at one Cedar Rapids site. So “Iowa Precision versus Engel” is premium-versus-value inside one vendor, and the Vulcan plasma tables many buyers pair with a coil line are a Lockformer product from the same stable, not a third party.

Genuine alternatives are lines from other owners: Vicon and Firmac (Lindab group since 2024 and 2023), the export-tier line makers, and Taokron.

Why buyers look for an alternative (none of which is a knock on Iowa Precision)

  • Premium positioning. Iowa Precision is the top tier of Mestek’s coil lines and is priced as such. A shop that needs a straight-duct line for one shift often cannot justify Pro-Fabriduct automation.
  • Dealer geography. The published dealer network covers the United States and Canada. Outside North America, commissioning, rolls and service come through export channels.
  • Landed cost and lead time. Freight, duties, parts round-trips and a built-to-order slot all weigh on an overseas buyer; coil-line lead times are not published.
  • One catalogue for the whole workflow. Mestek splits lines (Iowa Precision, Engel), plasma and TDC (Lockformer) and bending brakes (Roto-Die) across brands. Some buyers want one vendor, one PLC family and one commissioning team.
  • Software ecosystem. Mestek lines integrate with Autodesk, Trimble, PractiCAM and SDS. A shop already standardised on one of those wants to confirm the alternative imports the same files before it prices anything.

The alternatives, by tier

The table is the short version; the notes below explain each tier. Ranges are what each maker publishes.

The benchmark: what Iowa Precision actually publishes

The Pro-Fabriduct runs 4 or 5 ft stock at 16 ga standard (14 ga optional) with an 18 ga dual-head TDC/TDF former, a 10 ft transfer (12 or 14 ft optional) and a full-width X-Y in-line plasma bed, importing from Autodesk, Trimble, PractiCAM and SDS. The Fabriduct NEO takes 47.88–60.12 in material at 16–26 ga (14 ga optional) with eight coil stations standard and a B&R control; its ProDuct seam is rated SMACNA Class A. The Fabriduct Infinity runs 16–25 ga at up to 75 ft/min with up to twelve 12,000 lb coil stations. Around the lines sit the Cornermatic corner inserters and Whisperloc seam closers. NEO line speed and footprint are not published.

Those figures are the checklist to put to every alternative: coil width and count, gauge with the heavy-gauge option, the flange former’s gauge, transfer length, plasma bed width and the file formats the controller imports.

The sister brands: Engel and Lockformer

If the reason for leaving Iowa Precision is price rather than geography, Mestek’s own answer is Engel: the Compact II Starter and Full lines and the ValuePLUS2 lines, positioned as the practical, cost-efficient tier, with 800 Series Pittsburgh and snap-lock formers listed as available for immediate delivery. Lockformer supplies the TDC T25a former (18–26 ga at 60 ft/min or 16–24 ga at 70 ft/min) and the VulcanPlus plasma table (5 × 10 ft, up to 3/8 in mild steel). Best for: North American shops that want a lower price through the dealer they already use. Weigh: same parent, same dealer map.

The Lindab pair: Vicon and Firmac

Vicon Machinery builds coil lines, TDX flange formers and HVAC plasma tables in Missouri and Pennsylvania and became part of Lindab in early 2024; Firmac (UK) joined in 2023. With Spiro for round duct, Lindab is now the one Western group that covers the whole duct-machinery range. Best for: buyers who want a premium independent line from a global group. Weigh: price it as a full line, and ask how machinery service is organised in your region.

The value tier — and where Taokron fits

At the lowest acquisition cost, export makers offer auto duct lines, roll formers and plasma from one catalogue. Across this tier PLC quality, roll hardness, notching accuracy and after-sales support vary widely, so compare on written specs, an installed reference and an acceptance test on your own coil. Our auto duct line comparison shows how the three Taokron lines differ.

This is where Taokron sits, and this is our own machinery, so read it as a vendor’s case. Taokron is an Australian supplier that has built HVAC duct machinery since 1995, with 5,000+ machines in 100+ countries, ISO 9001:2015 and CE certification and catalog-accurate published specs. The SBAL-V U-shape line takes 1250 or 1550 mm coil (about 49 or 61 in) at 0.5–1.5 mm (roughly 26–16 ga) with 18 m/min feed (about 59 ft/min), 40 kW and a 14.5 m footprint. The SBAL-III covers 0.5–2.0 mm with hydraulic notching and shearing on an 8,000 kg (17,600 lb) decoiler; the SBAL-II is the entry line in the same envelope. Around them: SBTDF flange formers (0.5–1.2 and 0.8–1.5 mm, 35 mm flange), SBLC Pittsburgh formers, plasma cutting and welding. We run a factory acceptance test on your coil and your cut list before shipment and quote commissioning days in the contract. Best for: shops outside the North American dealer map, and first-line buyers anywhere, who want coil-line automation with direct engineer support at export-tier capital cost. Weigh: we are not the benchmark brand; ask for installed references in your region and put a real job file through the acceptance test.

Switching without stranding your ductwork

Duct from a different line fits existing duct because the seams and flanges are standards, not an Iowa Precision geometry: Pittsburgh and snap lock are SMACNA seams, TDF is the SMACNA T-25b flange and TDC follows the T-25a profile, so cleats and corners interchange. What does not transfer is the tooling, the PLC and the CAM link. Before you sign:

  • Coil width, count and weight. Match the coil widths your supplier delivers, decide how many coil stations you need, and confirm decoiler capacity against your heaviest coil.
  • Gauge with margin. Specify the heaviest gauge you will run in the next five years, not this year.
  • Flange former. Decide TDF or TDC (or both on a dual head) before you shop; the profile is a standard, so existing duct still connects.
  • Plasma and transfer. If fittings are cut in line, confirm bed width and transfer length; if plasma stays separate, confirm the nesting hand-off.
  • Software path. Test your real CAMduct, PractiCAM, FabShop or cut-list files on the new controller before commissioning day.
  • Electrical and floor. Voltage, phase, frequency (50 versus 60 Hz), compressed air and 12–15 m of floor with run-out.
  • Spares and days. Stocked rolls, blades and dies with quoted delivery; commissioning and training days written into the contract with an acceptance test that measures seam, flange and squareness.

The headline: operators cross between coil lines in days; the switching cost sits in coil handling, the flange decision and the software path.

FAQ

Is Engel an alternative to Iowa Precision?

Not in the ownership sense. Both are Mestek Machinery brands built at the same Cedar Rapids site and sold through the same dealer network; Mestek positions Iowa Precision as premium and Engel as the value line. It is a step down in price inside one vendor rather than a brand switch.

Is Vulcan plasma an Iowa Precision product?

No. The Vulcan and VulcanPlus plasma tables are Lockformer products, another Mestek Machinery brand. Iowa Precision’s Pro-Fabriduct integrates an in-line plasma bed of its own.

Will duct from another line fit duct made on an Iowa Precision line?

Yes, if seam and flange match. Pittsburgh and snap lock are SMACNA seams; TDF (T-25b) and TDC (T-25a) are standard flange profiles, so cleats and corners interchange. Confirm gauge and test a sample joint.

Does Iowa Precision tooling transfer to another brand?

No. Roll sets, notching dies and shear blades are machine-specific, and the controller and CAM link are brand-specific. Budget full tooling and test your job files on the new controller.

What is the best independent alternative to Iowa Precision?

In North America, the Lindab-owned Vicon is the premium independent; in Europe, Firmac. For coil-line automation at export-tier capital cost with direct engineer support, Taokron’s SBAL lines are our own case, so ask us for references in your region.

Where does the real cost of switching coil-line brands sit?

In coil handling, the flange system you standardise on and the software path. Operator retraining is small. Put your own coil and a real job file through the acceptance test before the old line is retired.
