First, what counts as an alternative — and what doesn’t
Vicon Machinery is headquartered in Bohemia, New York, builds coil lines, roll formers and duct fabrication machines in Pevely, Missouri, and plasma, laser and software in Meadville, Pennsylvania (the former Plasma Automation, whose domain now redirects to Vicon). Everything is, in its own words, “proudly designed and manufactured in the USA” with “industry-leading warranty and lifetime phone support”. In January 2024 Lindab announced the purchase of the Vicon group (about SEK 260 million in sales, 64 staff, second-generation owners retained) and closed it on 8 February 2024; Vicon’s web shop is now hosted on a Spiro domain. So Firmac (UK rectangular lines, Lindab since 2023) and Spiro (Swiss spiral, Lindab since 1992) are sister companies, not alternatives.
Genuine alternatives are the Mestek Machinery brands (Iowa Precision, Engel, Lockformer), the export-tier line makers and Taokron.
Why buyers look for an alternative (none of which is a knock on Vicon)
- Premium US pricing. Vicon sells on US manufacture, servo speed and its software. A first-line buyer or an overseas shop often shops a lower capital tier for the same 60 in, 16–30 ga envelope.
- Distribution is North American. Vicon lists a global presence but its distributor network is US-based (about 20 distributors). Outside North America you buy and get service through export channels or, since 2024, through whatever the Lindab group organises locally.
- The new parent also makes duct. Lindab is Europe’s largest duct maker. Some contractors weigh buying machinery from a group that also sells the product they fabricate.
- Landed cost and lead time. US-built lines carry freight, duties and parts round-trips for an overseas buyer; lead times are not published.
- Software lock-in. Vicon’s coil lines and plasma tables run Vicon software. A shop standardised on Autodesk Fabrication CAMduct, PractiCAM or Trimble FabShop wants to confirm the file path before it prices anything, whichever brand it buys.
The alternatives, by tier

The benchmark: what Vicon actually publishes
The Duct Line Express is Vicon’s modular front end: 16–30 ga mild steel, 48–60 in coil widths standard, 12,000 lb coil capacity with coil drive, one to six coil stations, a gear-driven four-roll straightener, beader, notcher and a dual-cylinder hydraulic shear, driven by a precision servo feed and Vicon Coil Line Software for Windows configurable to SMACNA standards, and designed to grow into the Full Coil Line. The TDX 16-station roll former runs 18–26 ga (16 ga option) at 70 ft/min with a 7.5 hp motor and forms the T-25b flange; the 12-station TDX-II runs 18–26 ga at 50 ft/min for the T-25a connection. The HVAC 510 plasma table is 5 × 10 ft (extensions to 6 × 20 ft), with the HVAC 520 at 5 × 20 ft, dual rack-and-pinion drives and Hypertherm Powermax sources; fiber lasers at 1.5 and 3 kW round out the cutting side. Production speeds for the coil lines are not published beyond the “fastest production rate in the industry” claim.
Take two things from that: Vicon is a complete rectangular system (line, flange, plasma, software) and the checklist to put to every alternative is coil width and weight, gauge, flange profile and speed, table size and plasma source, and the file formats the controller imports.
The US counterpart: Mestek Machinery
Trade press records that Vicon grew by competing with Mestek Machinery after Mestek bought Met-Coil (Lockformer, Iowa Precision) in 2000 and Engel in 2003. Mestek remains the like-for-like US alternative: Iowa Precision’s Pro-Fabriduct (4 or 5 ft stock, 16 ga standard, dual-head TDC/TDF former, in-line plasma bed) and Fabriduct NEO; Engel’s value Compact II and ValuePLUS2 lines and TDF T25B formers (18–26 ga at 75 ft/min); Lockformer’s TDC T25a formers and Vulcan plasma tables, all sold through a US and Canadian dealer network. The value tier — and where Taokron fits
At the lowest acquisition cost, export makers sell auto duct lines, roll formers and plasma from one catalogue. PLC quality, roll hardness, notching accuracy and after-sales vary widely; compare on written specs, an installed reference and an acceptance test on your own coil. This is where Taokron sits, and this is our own machinery, so read it as a vendor’s case. Taokron is an Australian supplier that has built HVAC duct machinery since 1995, with 5,000+ machines in 100+ countries, ISO 9001:2015 and CE certification and catalog-accurate published specs. Against the Vicon envelope: the SBAL-V U-shape line takes 1250 or 1550 mm coil (about 49 or 61 in) at 0.5–1.5 mm (roughly 26–16 ga) with 18 m/min feed (about 59 ft/min); the SBAL-III covers 0.5–2.0 mm on an 8,000 kg (17,600 lb) decoiler; the SBAL-II is the entry line. For flanges, the SBTDF formers (0.5–1.2 and 0.8–1.5 mm, 35 mm flange) and TDC former. For cutting, the SBPC plasma table (1550×4000 or 1550×5000 mm, 0.4–4 mm, 12 kW) and the SBLC fiber laser (1500×4000 mm, 2 or 3 kW). Our controllers take standard cut lists and nesting output, and we test your job file and your coil in the factory acceptance test before shipment. Best for: shops outside the North American distributor map, and first-line buyers anywhere, who want the whole rectangular workflow with direct engineer support at export-tier capital cost. Weigh: we are not a US brand; ask for installed references in your region and put a real job through the acceptance test.
Switching without stranding your ductwork
Duct made on another line fits duct made on a Vicon line because the seams and flanges are standards: Pittsburgh and snap lock are SMACNA profiles and TDX forms the T-25b (or T-25a on the TDX-II), so cleats and corners from any supplier interchange. Tooling, controls and software do not transfer. Before you sign:
- Coil width, count and weight. US lines run 48 and 60 in coil; metric lines 1250 and 1550 mm. Confirm your supplier’s widths, the number of stations you need and decoiler capacity against your heaviest coil.
- Gauge with margin. Specify the heaviest gauge you will run in five years.
- Flange profile. Decide TDF (T-25b) or TDC (T-25a) before you shop; the profile is a standard so existing duct still connects.
- Plasma table and source. Match table size to your sheet and coil-feed plans, and confirm the plasma source and consumables supply locally.
- Software path. If you leave Vicon software, test your CAMduct, PractiCAM, FabShop or cut-list files on the new controller before commissioning day.
- Electrical and floor. Voltage, phase, 50 versus 60 Hz, compressed air, 12–15 m for a full line.
- Spares and days. Stocked rolls, blades, dies and torch consumables with quoted delivery; commissioning and training days and an acceptance test in the contract.
The headline: operators cross between coil lines in days; the switching cost sits in coil handling, the flange decision and the software path.

Who owns Vicon Machinery?
The Swedish Lindab group. Lindab announced the purchase of the Vicon group (Vicon Machinery, Plasma Automation and two smaller entities, about SEK 260 million in sales) in January 2024 and closed it on 8 February 2024. Vicon still builds in Pevely, Missouri and Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Is Plasma Automation a different company from Vicon?
Not any more in practice. Plasma Automation was Vicon’s Meadville, Pennsylvania plasma, laser and software arm; its domain now redirects to viconmachinery.com and it came into Lindab in the same 2024 transaction.
Will duct from another line fit duct made on a Vicon line?
Yes, if seam and flange match. Pittsburgh and snap-lock seams are SMACNA profiles; the TDX forms the SMACNA T-25b flange and the TDX-II the T-25a connection, so cleats and corners interchange. Confirm gauge and test a sample joint.
Does Vicon tooling or software transfer to another brand?
No. Roll sets, notching dies and shear blades are machine-specific, and Vicon Coil Line Software runs Vicon machines. Budget full tooling and test your job files on the new controller.
What is the best alternative to Vicon?
